RARE FACEL VEGA FOUND

garage in North Wales for almost
50 years will form part of H&H
Classics’ next classic auction.
Right-hand drive and reputedly
one of just 98 UK cars, the
Brunswick Blue example was first
registered as ‘WO 2’ on 15 July
1960 and supplied new to W.E.
O’Shay of the car accessories giant,
Magnatex, before later passing
to a new owner, Londoner Kevin
Silcock. It was last MoT’d in 1972
with 55,000 miles recorded. The
HK500 was said to be “in need of
some TLC” by the time it entered
new ownership in 1976, and has
been locked away ever since.
Mike Davis, senior specialist at
H&H Classics commented: “This
vehicle find is an absolute gem! To
find such a complete car tucked
away in a garage for such a long
period of time is a very special
moment. Further adding to its
appeal, both rare and stylish in
equal measures, this right-hand
drive ‘HK1’ has the makings of an
incredibly rewarding project.”
Introduced in 1958, the HK500
was one of the fastest cars of its
generation, designed to compete
with the Ferrari 250 GTE, Maserati
3500GT and Aston Martin DB4.
Owners included Pablo Picasso,
Sir Stirling Moss and François
Truffaut.
The unique discovery will be
offered with no reserve when it
goes under the hammer on April
26 in Buxton. Bidding can be done

Drive It Day has been an important milestone on the national classic
car calendar since it was created by the Federation of British Historic
Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC) in 2005. While centred around a celebration
of the One Thousand Mile Trial, organised in 1900 to prove the
viability of a new invention, the motor vehicle, the annual diary date
simply offers the public at large an opportunity to celebrate our
transport heritage.
This year, Drive It Day takes place this Sunday (April 23), with
masses of events taking place up and down the country, all set to
mark the occasion and designed to get you and your classic out and
about. There’s something for everyone, whichever county you call
home. The official beneficiary for the 2023 event is once again the
NSPCC’s Childline service, which helps over 800 children and young

BUCK MARKET TREND
Classic car industry experts report a growing appetite for ‘80s and
‘90s cars, with recent auction records smashed

lassic car experts are
reporting that cars first
sold in the 1980s and
1990s are performing well in a
topsy-turvy market, bucking a
trend that has seen an overall drop
in values.
Hagerty’s Price Guide collates
the results of auction, dealer and
private sales, building a financial
picture of the UK’s classic car
market over a full calendar year
and indicating trends across all
sectors of the market. Over the
last 12 months, the average across
over 40,000 values monitored has
dropped by 3.8 per cent, or £8961
on average per car. However,
cars first sold in the 1980s and
1990s seem to be substantially
bucking that trend, having gained
an average of £5856 in the same
period.
There have been some significant
risers among the cars produced
during these two decades,
especially when it comes to fast-
road cars. The record sale of a Ford
Sierra RS500 for £592,250 against
an estimate of £150,000-£180,000
was a notable headline grabber,
but the Sierra RS Cosworth model

in general has risen in value by an
average of £20,200. In addition,
German classics of the period have
also had a significant boost, with
the BMW E30 M3 up by £17,050,
the Porsche 928 GTS up by
£13,350, the Mercedes E36 AMG up
£12,250 and the rare BMW E28 M5
up by £10,375.
Similarly, rally derived cars of the
period have been doing well too.
The Audi Quattro Turbo Sport is
up by £14,000, while the Renault
5 Turbo 1 is up by an impressive
£13,625 and the Lancia Delta HF
Integrale Evoluzione II has risen by
a substantial £11,200.
Not all cars from the 1980s

Hagerty Price Guide suggest that

still growing. In general, their values
have increased while the rest of
the market has fallen slightly.
Those that have fallen tended to
be those that gained value very
quickly over the last few years,
and probably rose to unrealistic
levels. The drops in average value
seen in cars like the Porsche 911
(993), Ferrari Testarossa and 308
are all corrections back to more
sustainable values.”
HOT TO TROT
General auction results over the
last 12 months support the view
that ’80s and ’90s cars are in
accession, with several records
smashed for hot hatches in
particular. Last August, Anglia
Car Auctions saw a low mileage
1999 Citroen Saxo VTR go under
the hammer for a record-breaking
£18,900 including fees, while a
1987 Peugeot 205 GTI sold for a
staggering £69,768 at the Aguttes
Tour Auto sale 12 months ago.
Last year, WB & Sons in
Newcastle sold a 1992 Toyota
Celica GT4 Carlos Sainz for
£30,100 – a new UK auction high
for a road-going example, while the
same sale saw a 1998 Peugeot 106
GTI go for £15,950 to an American
buyer – another record. In addition,
an immaculate 1991 Ford Fiesta RS
Turbo showing 47,000 miles went
for £24,725 last July, and while that
wasn’t a record, it was only a few
hundred behind the bar set in 2018
by a 4000-mile example. Viewed
as a whole, the numbers underline
a growing desire to grab modern
classics.
General Manager at WB & Sons,
James Wray-Brayshaw, told CCB:
“We have set a couple of auction
records in the last 12 months,
including that Peugeot 106 GTI,
which sold to a Texas-based bidder
for nearly £16,000! I think the way
prices have been rising we will see
that record beaten again in 2023.”
This 1999 Citroen Saxo VTR went
under the hammer for a record-
breaking £18,900 including fees at
Anglia Car Auctions last August.
The rise in values for these
modern classics is almost
certainly being driven by younger
enthusiasts, who are now armed
with the funds to fulfil the dreams
of their early driving careers.
“Hagerty is seeing the average age
of the people we insure dropping
each year,” adds John Mayhead.
“As these new, younger buyers
enter the market, we’re not
surprised that they are interested
in a new generation of classic
cars. The rise of online auctions is
probably a factor, too.”
With demand usually outstripping
supply, we expect the upsurge in
values for ’80s and ’90s cars to
continue. What the knock-on effect
will ultimately be for the rest of the
market, however, remains to be
seen.

BBC TOP GEAR UNDER THREAT

MORGAN SUPPORTS CHARITY

T
he future of the BBC’s Top
Gear television show has been
thrown into doubt following an
accident involving presenter Andrew
“Freddie” Flintoff. The former cricket
star was airlifted to hospital after
his Morgan flipped during filming in
December, with production of series
34 of Top Gear paused ‘indefinitely’
as a result. Now it has been
confirmed that the 45-year-old will
not shoot a second series of his BBC
cricket programme, Field of Dreams,
throwing doubt on whether he will
return to Top Gear at all.
Flintoff was reported as ‘lucky
to be alive’ following the crash at
Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey. The
open-topped three-wheel Morgan
Super 3 which he was driving flipped
over, leaving him with broken ribs
and facial injuries, and he is said to
be convalescing at home. Flintoff
began presenting Top Gear in 2019
alongside Paddy McGuinness and
Chris Harris.
Morgan will support the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity (MAAC) as its local charity partner for 2023.
Fundraising activities, including events at the
Morgan Experience Centre in Malvern, will aim
to generate funds for the cause while raising
awareness for the charity’s pre-hospital
emergency service.
MAAC operates three air ambulances and
three critical care cars across the largest air
ambulance region in the country, delivering
lifesaving care on more than 4500 missions
per year across six Midlands counties. The
Morgan Experience Centre will also be open
to MAAC critical care staff as a rest spot
between missions, part of the charity’s Brew
for the Crew scheme.

T
he Historics sale at Ascot
Racecourse on April 8 came
galloping along hot on the heels
of the firm’s recent auction at The
London Classic Car Show, Olympia, in
February. A welcome bout of spring
weather greeted the full auction hall,
with hundreds having attended the
preceding three days of viewing.
The sale both underlined the market’s
appetite for rare classics, but also the
potential for a 2023 bargain. A Mk4
Ford Escort XR3i Cabriolet was one of
several to tick the latter box, selling
for a mere £3622, with a 19,750-mile
Austin Metro Vanden Plas dating from
1983 another contender at £3920. More
expensive but equally good value was
a 1970 Lotus Europa, which had been
the subject of a major refurbishment
costing £34,000 yet sold for £15,120.
However, there were plenty of
noteworthy results at the other end
of the scale. A beautiful 1964 Ford
Lotus Cortina Mk1 ended at £69,440,
while a 1963 Austin-Healey 3000 MkII
went on to make £89,600. Another

1968 Triumph TR5 soared above its top
estimate to settle at £44,800, with a
1952 Jaguar XK120 Roadster prepared
to fast-road specification attracting
much interest at no reserve before
selling for £66,788.
Amid the regal setting, it was fitting
that Rolls-Royce and Bentley were well
represented. Of these, a 41,000-mile
Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph from 2000
wafted past its top estimate to settle on
£42,560, and 1969 Bentley T1 offered
without reserve sold for £24,640 after a
bidding tussle. Continuing the prestige
vibe, meanwhile, a 1998 Aston Martin
Volante LWB with only 21,000 miles on
its clock was sold for £110,000.
Further impressive lots included a
stunning 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL
Pagoda kept by its previous owner for
four decades, which finally ended at
£113,200. It wasn’t the only German
classic in high demand though, with a
1983 Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk1 making
£13,018 and a 1969 Porsche 912 selling

One of just 25 cars in right-hand drive, this 1989 Maserati Karif

was special enough already, but it carried another trump card
in having covered just 24,900 miles. It came with plenty of
history and sold above its upper estimate for £29,120.

This 1989 Ford Escort XR3i Cabriolet was fully recommissioned in Finished in British Racing Green, this 1998 Aston Martin DB7 had
2021, yet retained its original number plates and dealer sticker. It been cherished by its previous owner for 16 years. Accompanied
was a great piece of nostalgia and was offered with no reserve, by a good service history and showing just 46,000 miles on its

outh Western Vehicle Auctions
(SWVA) will be hoping for
another buoyant conversion
rate when it holds its second classic
car sale of the year at its Poole base
on April 28. There were almost 70 cars
entered at the time of writing, ranging
from pre-war commercials to modern
classics.
The auction will begin, as ever, with
affordable classics, many offered with
no reserve. These include a tidy 1992
Audi 100, a 1993 Rover 820 showing
just 68,000 miles and something of a
sleeper in the shape of a 1998 Peugeot
406 GLX with the 3.0-litre V6 engine.
There’s bargain prestige in
abundance too, with a 1994 Daimler
Six running on LPG estimated at just
£1000-£1500, a 1996 Jaguar XJR
expected to sell for under £2000
and a Japanese-import XJ6 3.2
LWB from the same year guided at
£1800-£2800. On a similar theme,
a pair of Mercedes SLKs in 230 and
320 flavours could be snapped up
for less than £1000 apiece, while a
W123-generation 300D in need of TLC
but with a current MoT is guided at
just £500-£1000. Another potential
bargain is a 1991 300 SL estimated
at £2000-£3000, with a 280 CE and
an SL 350 both dating from 1978 also
looking for new homes.
A further Stuttgart vehicle is a
2003 Porsche Boxter estimated at
just £2500-£3500, and those with
deeper pockets might consider a 2004
Aston Martin DB9 with a tempting
£18,000-£20,000 guide, or perhaps
a 2007 Volante version that could top
£30,000. Older prestige, meanwhile,
includes a 1947 Bentley MkVI saloon at
an estimated £14,000-£15,000.
Elsewhere, a wide selection of
traditional classics will see at least four
MGBs offered, plus further Octagons
in the shape of an MGC roadster, a
1972 Midget, a 1955 Magnette ZA and
1997 MGF showing a genuine 25,000
miles. A 1957 Austin-Healey 100/6
could be a star at a predicted £25,500-
£27,500, while other entries include a
modified Mini Clubman Estate, a bog-
standard Mini 1000 and a trio of classic
Triumphs comprising a 1966 TR4 IRS, There’s a wide selection of potential Mercedes bargains in
a 1969 Vitesse Convertible and a rare the sale, including this 1991 R129-generation 300 SL guided at
Mayflower from 1952. a mere £2000-£3000. It shows 174,000 miles but has been well
maintained by its vendor, who has owned the car since 1997.

– this sale has a wide range of bases

Joining several Jaguars in the sale, this stunning Series 2 E-Type

2+2 could be one of the sale’s biggest hitters at an estimated
£32,000-£35,000. Imported from California, the 1969 example
has since been converted to right-hand drive and restored with
a host of desirable upgrades.

Surely an ideal starter classic, this very original Ford Fiesta
Popular Plus dates from 1986 and has covered just 18,159 miles
from new. It’s said to be in great condition and is guided at a
very tempting £1500-£2500.
From the same collection as the Consul Capri comes this 1929
Austin Seven Van. It’s one of four Sevens in the sale – three of
them vans – and looks to be in superb condition. It’s expected to
sell for £13,000-£15,000.
Famed for its ‘razor edge’ styling, the Triumph Mayflower is now
a rare sight. This 1952 car has had just five owners in 71 years
and went through a major restoration in 1994 that included an
engine rebuild, a bare metal respray and interior retrim. Despite
that, it’s guided at just £1400-£2400.

A late Mk1 variant, this 1997 Mazda MX-5 is a very clean An example of the rare limited edition Neon variant, this One of eight cars from a deceased estate, this fetching pink

These three everyman hatchbacks represented major milestones for their
respective manufacturers, helping each to prosper in a new, modern era
Mk1 VW GOLF
(1974-1983)
In the early 1970s Volkswagen was
in trouble. The market’s appetite
for rear-engined economy cars
was dwindling, while fluctuations in
Germany’s domestic currency, the
Deutschmark, had made the Beetle
too expensive. When the Beetle’s
safety was called into question, it
was the final nail in its coffin; VW
needed a hit, and fast. Amid a sea
of saloons, and new best-sellers
including the Ford Escort and Opel
Kadett, the Mk1 Golf, introduced
in 1974, offered something a
little different. A precursor to a
class it would come to define, the
hatchback would go on to sell 6.8
million units.
Though it may be tough, we’ll
ask you to forget the GTI for once;
here we are celebrating the purity
of Guigiaro’s original design.
The Wolfsburg factory initially
offered the Mk1 with three or five
doors, fitted with either 1093cc
or 1471cc engines linked to four-
speed gearboxes, while trim levels
ranged from base through S, L, or
LS. The very earliest Golfs (pre-
December ‘75) are recognisable for
their “swallow-tail” rear panels; a
shapely rump with a design line that
dips and rises below the number

plate. These are now the most
sought after.
The VW scene is hugely fond of
the MK1; even non-GTI models are
hot property, but the simplistic
classics remain attainable – five
door models more so than their
three-door equivalents. Entry-level
values were static at around £2000
for several years. Today, buy on
condition above all else and expect
to pay £7000-£15,000 for a very
nice three-door.
Mk1 FORD FIESTA
(1976-1983)
Ford was late to the blossoming
supermini sector when it revealed
its Fiesta in 1976, however, it
successfully took the fight to cars
such as the Volkswagen Polo,
Renault 5 and Fiat 127. And while
Ford was already a profitable giant,
the brand’s first front-wheel-drive
model in Europe was a clever bit
of design that quickly became a
best-seller.
Initially available with engine
capacities of 957cc and 1117cc,
Ford would also offer the 1298cc
Kent Crossflow engine in the range-
topping Ghia and S. Nine core
models were ultimately produced;
Base, Popular, Popular Plus, L, GL,
Ghia, S, Supersport and XR2, but
here we are only concentrating

on the entry-level “everyman”
versions. In 1981, the basic Fiesta
became the Popular and Popular
Plus, with a facelift later that same
year bringing in larger wraparound
bumpers and improvements to the
interior. Even when Mk1 production
ended in 1983, the Fiesta was still a
top five seller in the UK charts.
There’s a healthy following for
the first Fiesta, with good parts
availability. The more “vanilla”
versions remain relatively
attainable by classic Ford
standards, and a great entry into
the Blue Oval scene. While it’s
still possible to buy a project for
peanuts, nice entry-level (non-
sporty) cars have remained static
at £2500 and above for the last five
years, with around £6000 as the
ceiling unless it’s truly exceptional.
Metro
(1980-1997)
The Metro was British Leyland’s
great hope. It made no bones
about going head-to-head with
the Ford Fiesta and in some areas
it was actually a better car. Many
considered its A-Series to be a
more energetic and useable engine
than Ford’s old Kent unit, or the
likes of the Volkswagen Polo’s
lacklustre 895cc offering. Sales
were strong, at least initially.

WINNING FORMULA
The British Saloon and Touring Car Championships have given rise to special versions of some of
the most popular road cars over the last 65 years. We look back on our favourites

ack in the ’50s, marketing was a
whole lot simpler. The emerging world
of saloon car racing looked to be an
ideal way for manufacturers to showcase
the prowess of their latest tin-tops, and on
Boxing Day in 1957, the British Saloon Car
Championship arrived to fill the void for a
national series. Jack Sears was crowned
as the first champion in 1958, and though
many might not remember the Austin A105
Westminster he drove for its racing pedigree,
the motto “win on Sunday, sell on Monday”
was well on its way to becoming a thing.
Indeed, it didn’t take long before
manufacturers were building performance
variants of their mainstream cars to
homologate them for racing. Over the years,
British Saloon Car Championship became
a phenomenon, being renamed as the
British Touring Car Championship in 1987
and inspiring the production of a host of
memorable halo models for the road. Here,
we’re celebrating iconic favourites born out
of the championship’s first four decades.
MINI COOPER
For its first 32 years, the championship was
run with a mix of classes, divided according

to engine capacity. That meant a smaller car
could end up a title winner – like the Mini
Cooper in the hands of Rhodesian John Love
in 1962.
As alien as it may seem nowadays, the
Mini was never designed to be sporty.
Creator Alec Issigonis intended it as a simple
people’s car, but John Cooper – boss of his
eponymous F1 team – had other ideas.
The Mini Cooper was officially launched
in September 1961, with its new twin-carb
997cc motor producing 55bhp. This was
primarily to homologate the car for saloon
car racing rather than lure buyers into
showrooms, but having the reigning world
champion’s name on the car proved to be
a masterstroke, and within a year of the
launch, one in five Minis sold were Coopers.
The even hotter Cooper S would take
things to the next level, famously winning
the Monte Carlo Rally three times. It was
launched in 1963 as the 1071 S, with 970 and
1275cc versions following in 1964 before
the 1275 became the sole S model shortly
after. Sadly, the Cooper was discontinued
in 1969, with the Cooper S also dropped in
1971 because of BL’s desire to avoid paying
royalties to John Cooper. However, Alec
Poole still managed a BSCC title before that
happened, taking a privately entered 970 S

to title honours in 1969. What’s more, the
Mini would enjoy a resurgence in the late
’70s when Richard Longman raced a 1275 GT
to consecutive BSCC title wins in 1978 and
1979.
LOTUS CORTINA
The Lotus Cortina was a product of mutual Lotus, and were built in-house at Ford’s

With Team Lotus campaigning the race cars,
Jim Clark (who had played an important role
in the car’s development) won the British
Saloon Car Championship in 1964. In 1965,
Sir John Whitmore won the European title for
Alan Mann Racing.
The legendary Mk1 bowed out in 1966, with
the Mk2 version launched in March 1967.
This time the cars were marketed as Cortina

graphics. The early cars even had rectangular
headlamps.
The car was not homologated for the
beginning of the 1968 season so the Alan
Mann Racing team had to start with a
Cortina. However, Australia driver Frank
Gardner had the Escort from round four
onwards and clinched the title with a round
to spare.
With the new RS1600 range-topper
already in production, the Twin Cam was
discontinued in June 1971, with 1263 cars
built. The Escort would continue to be a
contender in the BSCC until the middle of the
decade, but from 1974 would be replaced by
competitive Capris in 3-litre form.
TRIUMPH DOLOMITE SPRINT
The 1970s would see some new
manufacturers get their hands on the title,
with Bill McGovern winning three consecutive
titles in a Sunbeam Imp, Frank Gardner
winning the ’73 title in a Chevrolet Camaro
and Bernard Unett doing likewise in 1974 with

a Hillman Avenger. But then it was British
Leyland’s turn in the limelight.
BL was looking to boost the Dolomite’s
power to allow it to compete more effectively
in motorsport, but money was tight and
options were limited to a development of
the slant-four engine that had been funded
by Saab and so had first appeared as a
1.7-litre unit in the Saab 99. The solution was
ingenious and won a Design Council award
at the time. The Sprint’s engine capacity was
increased to 1998cc and it became the first
mainstream production car with a 16-valve
head, but it used just a single camshaft, with
the inlet valves operated by fingers from the
exhaust valves.

was rated at 127bhp, but in race form the
Broadspeed-prepared car driven by Andy
Rouse was good for closer to 220bhp.
Indeed, Rouse and the Sprint would take
second place in the 1974 series and the
championship title in 1975, with Tony Dron
then taking the car to second place in 1977
then third in 1978 before the car was no
longer competitive.
ROVER VITESSE
By the turn of the next decade, there was
an increasing challenge from Japanese
manufacturers, with title wins going to a
Mazda RX-7 in 1980 and ’81, and a Toyota
Corolla in 1982. However, there was still time
for a big-engined bruiser to shine.
No serious thought had been given to
motorsport when the Rover SD1 was unveiled
in 1976, but that changed when the BSCC
engine limit was raised from 3.0-litres to
3.5-litres in 1980. John Davenport, director
of BL Motorsport, managed to gain approval
to develop a racing variant, with mixed but
encouraging results. Tom Walkinshaw Racing
(TWR) would take the reins for 1981, winning
multiple races that year before taking class
honours in 1982.
Naturally, Rover’s marketing team
was keen to exploit this, and the race
team was keen for performance parts to
be homologated for racing. It was this
combination that led to the development
of the Vitesse model. Fuel injection was
added to liberate 190bhp in road-going spec,
combined with uprated suspension, better
brakes and fat alloys. There was also a new
rear spoiler that genuinely provided extra
downforce. The Vitesse was announced in
October 1982, and went on sale the following
year.
With Group A European rules in force
for the 1983 BSCC season, the Vitesse
absolutely dominated. However, an argument
over non-homologated parts saw the title
stripped away, with the decision only coming
halfway through 1984. Rover duly withdrew
its Works cars and would now compete in the
European Touring Car series only, but the
1984 BSCC title still went to an SD1 courtesy
of Andy Rouse in his privately entered steed.
Meanwhile, the famous Bastos-liveried SD1s
competed at the business end of the ETCC.
Further homologation-led changes
included a deeper front air dam for 1985,
and for 1986, the Vitesse ‘twin-plenum’
was produced featuring a new twin side-
entry throttle plenum fuel injection system
developed by Lotus to provide an improved
air/fuel mixture. It’s these twin-plenum cars
that are now the most desirable.
SIERRA RS COSWORTH
The be-winged Ford Sierra RS came about
purely for homologation reasons, stemming
from Ford’s desire to compete in Group A
circuit racing. Andy Rouse had already won
the 1985 BSCC championship in an XR4Ti,
but that model was never sold outside of the
United States and Canada.
Northampton firm Cosworth had been
working on a twin-cam, 16-valve version of
the Pinto 2-litre engine, and it was this motor
in forced-induction form that would become
the legendary YB. It’s first appearance was
in the new three-door Cosworth first shown
at the 1985 Geneva Motor Show but not
available until 1986. In road form it kicked out
204bhp-plus, meaning 149mph and 0-60mph
in 6.2 seconds.
Ford’s masterstroke was that the car you
saw on track was very similar to the car in
your local showroom. Even the massive wing

– needed to ensure sufficient downforce at
180mph for the European racers – was on
offer to the public, and a legend was born.
In 1987, production of an ‘evolution’
version of the original car took place for
homologation purposes, using 500 cars from
the original production run and resulting
in the RS500. Completed by Tickford, the
224bhp RS500 was good for 154mph and
featured a bigger turbo, plus eight injectors.
Despite its searing pace, the Cosworth
took time to see a championship win. It was
third with Andy Rouse in 1988 and third with
Rob Gravett in 1989 before Gravett took the
1990 title with fellow RS500 pilots Rouse
third and Tim Harvey fourth.
Of course, by that point the three-door
Cosworth had long been discontinued. The
Cosworth engine was instead installed in the
four-door Sierra Sapphire from 1988, with
the recipe further improved in 1990 when
Ford added all-wheel drive hardware.
BMW M3
During the late ’80s, only one racer was as
iconic as the Sierra Cosworth and that’s the
BMW M3. Taking the second-generation
‘E30’ 3 Series as a base, the car was
developed in-house by BMW Motorsport with

a steely focus on winning.
The range-topping road car was the 325i,
but its heavy six-cylinder was ditched in
favour of a lighter four-pot, BMW taking the
old iron-blocked M10 engine from the 2002
era as the basis. The resulting S14 engine
was rated at 200bhp in road trim but was
run at closer to 300bhp for racing. Revised
suspension arms and bushes dramatically
improved the handling, and with box-arched
bodywork it looked the part, too.
The M3 was presented to the public at the
1985 Frankfurt Motor Show, and production
began in March 1986. Although 5000 had to
be built to satisfy homologation rules, nearly
18,000 were produced in all, and following
year-to-year rule changes, new specials
were sold in limited volumes. These included
the Evo 1, Evo 2, and Sport Evolution, with

various upgrades made along the way.
The car was incredibly successful,
particularly on the European stage, but also
in the BTCC. Frank Sytner took the 1988 title
with his Prodrive car in its second year out.
The M3 also took the 1991 title in de-stoked
2-litre form, with Will Hoy at the wheel.
ALFA ROMEO 155
The wholesale move to a non-turbo 2-litre
class in 1991 (later adopted worldwide under
the ‘SuperTouring’ name) meant greater
interest from manufacturers. The M3 was
still a contender, but otherwise it was fleet
cars: Cavaliers, 405s, Carinas and – from
1993 – the Mondeo. There were a couple of
anomalies though to liven things up. Who can
forget Volvo, which entered the 1994 series
with an 850 T5 estate?
Perhaps the biggest controversy, however,
was created by Alfa Romeo. The 155 swept
the board in the 1994 BTCC, thanks to
clever aerodynamic aids. The rules allowed
additional spoilers if they were fitted to 2500
road cars and Alfa had exploited this by
producing the spoilered-up 155 Silverstone
road car, supplied with spoiler extension
brackets in the boot.
After complaints, Alfa Corse was told to
run without aerodynamic aids at Oulton Park,
but left the circuit in protest. Subsequently,
the team was told to race with the spoilers
in their retracted road car position, which
levelled the field slightly but still saw Gabriele
Tarquini keep his advantage and win the
championship.
The issue had long-lasting repercussions,
with all teams required to use showroom-
spec rear spoilers for the rest of the season,
until full aero was allowed for the following
year. The Alfa team, now run by Prodrive, had
a disappointing year and withdrew at the end
of 1995.
Similar controversy came in 1996 when
Audi muscled in with its quattro four-wheel
drive, winning the title despite being hit with
weight penalties. The Audi’s wins were wiped
out the following year by the Renault Laguna
though, with F1 team Williams clearly lending
the car massive pace.
The high number of manufacturer-backed
teams meant big budgets were needed to
be competitive and saw several withdrawals
until the 2000 season, when only Ford, Honda
and Vauxhall remained. Nevertheless, the
‘SuperTouring’ period is often remembered
as a golden time for the BTCC, and cars from
the era are fast rising in appreciation.

Is buying an immaculate example of Triumph’s sporty six-pot coupe a better bet than restoring
one? We get behind the wheel to find out

H
andsome, sporty, simple to work
on and with two more cylinders
than an MGB, the Triumph GT6 has
rightfully grown in both desirability and value
in recent years. But when a company that has
specialised in classic Triumphs for the best
part of 40 years says a car is “without doubt
the best” of its type that it’s ever had for sale,
you can’t help but take notice. And before
you even consider
the car itself,
the history file
accompanying
this GT6 (actually
two large lever-
arch folders and
a photo album)
tells the story.
As well as
all the original
documents – bill
of sale, service
booklet, warranty
card, driver’s handbooks and so on – there
is a thorough financial and photographic
record of the car’s body-off, bare-metal,
nut-and-bolt rebuild between 1990 and 1992
at a cost – then – of over £11,000. The file
includes written statements from each of
the car’s owners, confirming work done and
mileage covered. Also recorded is the GT6’s
history as a concours prize winner at club
and national level, including the Car of the
Show at the Triumph International Concours
and being a finalist at the Autoglym National

need to be said that it drives as well as it
looks – there’s something special about a
small-capacity straight six and this one pulls
strongly and sounds glorious. It has a sweet
gearbox with effective synchromesh, light
steering and perfect brakes. The ride feels
firm but composed, and there are no rattles
or knocks from either the underside or the
interior.
OUR VERDICT
Let’s be honest – even restoring a 1970s
Triumph to ‘as new’ condition leaves a lot of
room for improvement. With this GT6 that
room has been put to full use and I can find
nothing worth criticising about it. It would be
impossible to create such a car today – you
wouldn’t be able to find a low-mileage car in
fundamentally good condition as a starting
point, and you could spend the asking price
for this one on the restoration and still come
up short. On that basis this must actually
be a bargain, as well as the best GT6 on the
market.
HISTORY
The GT6 was the rather inevitable result
of mating the six-cylinder engine from
the Triumph Vitesse with the body of
the Spitire. Spitires running at Le
Mans had adopted streamlined coupe
bodywork, but tests had shown that the
extra weight robbed too much
performance when using the road-
going Spitire’s engine. Meanwhile
Triumph reasoned that a six-cylinder
open-top Spitire would tread on the
toes of the ‘full size’ TR sports car. Thus
the GT6 existed only with a unique
liftback coupe body and a power bulge
in a front end that was otherwise
shared with the Spitire.
Launched in 1966, the original GT6
had a 2.0-litre 95bhp six-pot. The
combination of a six-cylinder engine
and a 2+2 coupe body at a small size and
relatively small price was unique, as
was the GT6’s strong performance –
superior to the MGB GT that was its only
real rival. The GT6 quickly became the
car of choice for the driving enthusiast
who appreciated its speed and rather
demanding cornering characteristics
but also needed something practical
enough for daily use.
Criticisms of the GT6’s roadholding
due to the crude swing-axle rear
suspension were addressed with the
Mk2 of 1968 which introduced
Rotoflex rubber driveshaft couplings
which signiicantly tamed the GT6’s
tendencies to break grip mid-corner.
A new cylinder head and manifolds
took power to 104bhp and the top
speed to 107mph.
After just over two years the Mk2 was
replaced by the more matured Mk3,
which had reproiled nose and tail to
match the facelifted Spitire. The
expensive but effective Rotoflex
couplings were ditched in 1973,
replaced by a ‘swinging’ rear spring.
That year also brought a brake servo as
a standard and steel wheels as the only
itment. Although gathering its own
band of loyal enthusiasts, many of
whom bought one of each mark of GT6
in succession, sales were never enough
to make a proit, especially once the
Vitesse ended production in 1971. The
last GT6 (of just under 41,000) was
made in December 1973.

SAFETY INNOVATIONS
The gradual evolution of car safety has contributed to declining deaths on our roads. We chart
the history of the innovations – and acronyms – designed to keep us safer

P
utting the high-rise SUV driver
barrelling down the high street with
little regard for their surroundings to
one side for a minute, statistics show that
our roads are safer than ever. Since 2003 the
number of incidents has fallen by 37 per cent,
while the fatality rate has reduced by more
than half. But the groundwork to achieve all
this started a whole lot longer than 20 years
ago – and led to a whole host of acronyms
appearing on cars over a period of more than
four decades.
The first part of the 20th century is not an
era generally associated with safety-conscious
motoring, and yet we’d already seen advents
like the windscreen wiper (1903), rear view
mirror (1911), indicators (1914), and laminated
safety glass (1927) introduced. The first crash
tests were conducted as far back as the 1930s
and 1940s, while radial tyres were created by
Michelin in 1946, greatly aiding grip.
Nevertheless, in the 1940s and 1950s the
UK recorded its highest road fatality rates,
meaning more innovations were needed. By
the mid-1960s though, several factors were
helping to turn the tide. For starters, attitudes
were changing; drink driving was becoming
socially unacceptable, and advances in
medical treatments helped survival rates.

suffering serious injuries, road deaths were
in decline. As a nation we weren’t necessarily
becoming better drivers; rather, safety
improvements to our cars were helping us
survive incidents more often. So, how did we
get there?
SEATBELT ARRIVES
Airbags were being developed in the United
States as early as 1951, while Mercedes-Benz
was working on the first energy absorbing
crumple zones by 1952, but it would be years

before either went mainstream. Likewise,
while the first disc brake had been developed
all the way back in 1902, it was 50 years
before they were used on the Jaguar C-Type
racer of 1953, and 1955 before the technology
appeared on a production car courtesy of
the Citroën DS. There was, however, one
noteworthy safety milestone beyond compare
– Volvo’s introduction of the first three-point
seatbelts in 1959.

measures of all time. Bohlin introduced three-
point safety belts into series production on
the Volvo PV544, and since their widespread
adoption Volvo estimates that over one million

lives have been saved as a result of it waiving
its patent rights.
In 1967, it was written into law that all cars
sold in Britain must have front seatbelts fitted,
while the 1970s saw designers pay greater
consideration to how pedestrians might fare
in an impact with a car. Volvo also continued
its good work; in 1972, its rearward-facing
child seats were an industry-first, designed
to help minimise child injuries during an
accident. Then, in 1978 came the child booster
seat, allowing forward-facing kids to wear
three-point safety belts in the correct position.
Later, in 1990, Volvo would pioneer the
world’s first integrated booster cushion.
Volvo engineer, Nils Bohlin, invented the three-
point safety belt in 1959, and it would go on to
save an estimated one million lives all over the
world.

Child safety became a focus in the late ‘70s, with Volvo developing the booster seat and the rear-
facing child seat.
ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS
In 1966 the Jensen FF became the first
production car with anti-lock brakes, but
it was 1978 before the first mass-market
electronic system was available, Bosch buying
a patent developed in 1971 and naming it ABS.
The Mercedes W116 had it as an option, but
it was the Mk3 Ford Granada of 1985 that
became the first car to offer ABS as standard.
While the wearing of front seatbelts
became compulsory in the UK in 1983, it
was 1987 before the fitting of rear seatbelts
become mandatory. At the same time,
traction control began to appear on models
from manufacturers like Toyota, BMW and
Mercedes-Benz. Finally, airbags began to
appear widely in production cars too; but now
as supplemental restraint systems (SRS),
which integrated the seat belts and the airbag
into a restraint system, rather than the airbag
being considered an alternative to the seat
belt. The W126 Mercedes-Benz S-class of 1981
was the first car so-equipped to be sold in
Europe, with Porsche and Honda following in
1987. Sticking with Porsche, its 959 supercar
was the first car to sport a tyre-pressure
monitoring system (TPMS).
In another legislatorial move, the wearing of
rear seatbelts for adults became compulsory
in Britain in 1991 – a decade that also gave rise
to myriad new safety acronyms. Volvo’s Side
Impact Protection System (SIPS) became one
of the most well-known, featuring energy-
absorbing materials, a cross-member in
the floor and reinforced seats. Side-impact
airbags followed in 1994, with its Whiplash
Protection System (WHIPS), designed to
tackle common whiplash injuries in car
collisions, arriving in 1998. That same year the
inflatable curtain was another leap forward in
safety. It saw an airbag concealed in the car’s
headliner, inflating rapidly to help protect
the occupant’s head during a side impact or
rollover.
Mercedes-Benz were next with new

acronyms; its computerised electronic
stability control (ESC) system was developed
with the help of Bosch and first appeared on
S-Class in 1995, subsequently being adopted
by a wide range of manufacturers, including
Toyota, Volvo, and Audi. Mercedes-Benz also
introduced its Brake Assist System (BAS) in
1996.
BMW’s Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)
was its own take on electronic stability
control, the acronym also appearing on
Land Rover, BMW, MINI Jaguar, Ford and
Mazda vehicles. Other acronyms include VSC
(Vehicle Stability Control) for Toyota, and
PSM (Porsche Stability Management).
In the later part of the 1990s the European
New Car Assessment Programme (Euro
NCAP) was formed, crash testing and
publishing its findings on new cars. The Volvo
S40 was one of the first high achievers; a four-
star car for Adult Occupant Protection. Finally,
in 1997 Volkswagen and child-seat maker
Britax developed Isofix, allowing drivers to
attach a child seat with ease.
MODERN ADVANCES
As we entered the new millennium, fresh
safety measures continued at a rapid pace –
and so did the acronyms. Citroën was the first
car maker to offer a Lane Departure Warning
system in Europe, appearing in its C4, C5 and
C6 models in the mid-2000s.

Protection System (ROPS), a sophisticated
electronic roll stability control system, was
designed in 2002 with the growing popularity
of SUVs in mind. In 2003, the Swedes’
blind-spot system (BLIS) aimed to avoid
accidents while parking or changing lanes,
and the firm was once again at the cutting-
edge with the introduction of autonomous
emergency braking on the XC60 of 2008.
There was another push for pedestrian
safety during the same period; the Volvo DSC is BMW’s take on the ESP theme.

airbag, while the Jaguar XK and Citroën C6 several manufacturers introduced speed caps

over the Easter break, big jams seem rather
topical – and we rewind back to 1972 for this
one. Traffic which has just left the Chiswick flyover
in west London is pictured making slow progress

Sadly no DVLA data exists for RVG 121J, but the
lack of grille badge indicates it’s probably a 2000 SC
model. The Rover is following what looks to be a Mk2
Cortina, and behind, the big contrasting stripe down
the side of the BMC Farina suggests it’s an Austin
Cambridge. We can’t quite make out what’s behind
the Farina, but we can see a Mk1 Ford Escort next in
line, with a Mini Clubman behind that fending off the
attentions of a Ford D-Series truck. In the next lane
we can see an HB Vauxhall Viva, and what could well
be a Mk1 Escort estate with boards covering the rear

nthusiasts will need little in the way
of introduction to one of the most
affordable and popular cars on the
classic scene. Launched in 1962 to replace
the MGA, the MGB proved to be an instant
hit, and with monocoque construction it was
a much more modern affair. The roadster
appeared first, with the GT arriving in
1965 boasting its neat Pininfarina styling
that blended sporting looks with useful
practicality.
All were powered by the durable four-
cylinder B-Series engine (plus a V8 from
1973, although we’ll save that for another
time) and while there were numerous rivals
– including the likes of the Triumph TR4
and Sunbeam Alpine – few could match the
overall usability and driver appeal of this

INTERIOR & TRIM
Another part of the MGB’s appeal lies in the
comfortable and reasonably spacious cabin,
and with a sound driving position it makes for
a very useable classic. There’s not much to
concern potential buyers here, and everything
is available if refurbishment is needed; you’re
looking at around £700 for a full set of vinyl
seat covers and new carpets, with leather
costing a few hundred more if you want to
add some plushness.
The only question mark is around originality
as many cars have been restored more than
once, although this may or may not matter to
you. Perhaps more important is that a scruffy
interior is nothing to worry about if the rest of
the car is solid. All of this applies to both GTs
and roadsters, although the drop-top requires
an additional check for signs of water ingress
which won’t do trim any good and risks
corrosion in the floors.
There’s not much to worry about with
the electrics, either, with most problems
being caused by the usual combination of
corroded terminals and poor connections.
Of more concern is the potential for bodges
and amateur tinkering, so make sure that any
alterations or additions have been done to a
proper standard.
One other point worth mentioning is that
the electrical system used a pair of 6-volt
batteries located in compartments (which
are prone to corrosion so remember to

check them) behind the seats, and it’s not
uncommon to find this has been converted
to use a single 12-volt battery. Easy enough
to carry out – specialists can supply a
battery and fitting kit for around £120 – it’s
a worthwhile improvement that notably
improves starting in cold weather and proves
much cheaper when battery replacement is
needed (consider that a pair of new 6-volt
items are £180-200).
OUR VERDICT
Affordable, fun to drive and simple to
maintain, it’s easy to see why the B remains
so hugely popular with enthusiasts of all ages.
That it benefits from the sort of specialist and
club support that many classic car owners
can only dream of is the icing on the cake,
and it means that you can buy one safe in the
knowledge that you’ll not struggle for help
and advice.
That level of support shouldn’t be
underestimated if you want a pain-free
ownership experience. If there’s a downside
it’s the propensity for rust, and the potential
for cheap examples to have been bodged
in the past, but with so many out there
you shouldn’t have any trouble avoiding
problematic cars.
And whether you opt for a roadster or GT
you won’t be disappointed with the enjoyment
on offer, plus there’s lots of scope for
upgrades – from improvements to handling
and performance, to making one easier to live
with on longer journeys – so you can really
make an MGB your own. It might seem like
the default classic car choice but there are
good reasons why so many have fallen for its
charms.

The one thing you won’t struggle with is
finding MGBs for sale, so you can afford to
be fussy when it comes to condition and find
just the right car for your budget. For an early

miles – confirmed not only by a
full pack of documentation but by
the Porsche’s condition. It is free
from rust and the smart, bright and
flawless condition of the paint is
original and unrestored. The same
goes for the interior which lacks any
of the frays, splits, wear and tear
usually accumulated on a 40-plus
year old Porsche. The specification
includes electric windows and
full stainless exhaust system. The
complete original Porsche toolkit is
still with the car, too.

MAZDA RX-7 TURBO TVR TAIMAR TURBO LOTUS ESPRIT TURBO

As well as looking incredibly similar to the 924, Mazda’s
rotary-engined sports coupe also started out as something
simple and low-powered before gaining increasing power
and equipment. The turbocharged version appeared in 1983,
making just shy of the 924’s power output from 1146cc.
Not usually a name associated with early turbocharged
sports cars, TVR strapped a turbo to the Ford V6 to give its
ageing M-Series more power – a lot more power to the tune
of 230 horses. That put performance in supercar territory.
The Taimar also boasted a liftback, just like the 924.
The Esprit was another car that turned to turbocharging to
get the performance that the market had decided it
deserved. The mid-engined layout and fully independent
suspension meant that the Esprit matched – or exceeded –
the Porsche when it came to roadholding and handling.

gold-finished dashboard with the
small watch-like dials, marble-
finish steering wheel rim and a
long straight gear lever sprouting
from a red-carpeted floor. It’s a lot
more glamorous and, for a model
so closely associated with twee
the running gear from the Minor’s
rival (or in-house competitor), the
Austin A35 – all the more so when
the later versions did away with the
early quarter-elliptic rear springs.
But this ‘Frogeye’ is right at
the start of the Sprite story, with
the original rear suspension, the

However as with everything else in life, there’s a tiny percentage
that aren’t. However it’s dead-easy to protect yourself from fraud-
sters by using a bit of common-sense...
ADVICE FOR SELLERS
● Stay safe! Don’t give a buyer your address until you know they
are definitely coming to view. Better still, give them the general
location only at first and ask them to phone for the full address
once they are close.
● Always arrange a specific time for viewings – don’t accept
vague ‘I may come sometime today’ type arrangements.
● Serious buyers will want to examine the car fully – that’s fine
and you should be prepared to answer fully and honestly any
questions a buyer may have about the car. Be wary though if
they try to steer the conversation towards more general matters
concerning you and your family. Similarly, while a genuine enthu-
siast will probably be interested in your other cars, so will a
would-be burglar.
● Test drives need to be handled with care – on the one hand it’s
perfectly reasonable for a serious buyer to want to drive a car
before buying, but you need to remain in control. Make sure they
are insured to drive your car too, bearing in mind that ‘driving
other cars’ clauses on insurance policies normally cover only
third-party risks, not damage to your car.
● Ensure you drive your car first to demonstrate controls (etc.)
and then, once you are at a suitable place for the buyer to drive,
get out, taking the keys with you, and hand them back only once
you are back in the car.
● Do not accept a personal cheque from someone you do not
know; there is no longer any guaranteed clearance time, and a
cheque can now ‘bounce’ at any time – even weeks after it’s
been banked – if it’s discovered to be forged.
● Don’t get involved in any complex arrangements involving giv-
ing ‘change’ for a payment that’s more than your asking price,
especially involving overseas buyers or transfers using methods
such as Western Union – these are almost always fraudulent.
● Be very wary indeed of anyone calling and trying to sell your
advertisement in another publication. Such publications don’t al-
ways exist, and claimed distribution figures will often be vastly
exaggerated. Calls are also often recorded as ‘evidence’ of a
binding contract.
● Above all, trust your instincts! If something seems dodgy or
not quite right to you, then there’s a good chance you’re right.
