Business Orientation Project (BOP)

The Mentoring Program has a carefully designed Business Orientation Project (BOP)-2020.
Your mentor shall help you through the project.

Business Orientation Project (BOP) - 2020

You are on the edge of a huge change, which means a new role, a new system, new people and
new relationships, new processes, and new responsibilities. It also means coping with changes in
a new domain. We would like you to start preparing yourself to excel in this new world before
you start your course in June 2020.

Why should you join BOP?

BOP means familiarization with the business world. It is a structured project that you shall
complete with the help of your assigned faculty mentor from the institute. We recommend you to
join and participate it as it shall provide you an exposure to real life business problems and help
you appreciate and provide solutions to it. It shall also expose you to the industry/sector that you
aspire for. Finally, it shall motivate you to become corporate ready by rewarding your efforts. In
the process, you shall recognize your strengths and weaknesses for a corporate career, identify
your gap areas in terms of personality traits, skill sets, attitude, and knowledge base and work on
the gaps to be industry ready. It shall be a wonderful forum to interact with the corporate and
your faculty mentor a lot in advance of joining the program.

Please note that the program entails tasks that you can do in the comfort of your home,
browsing through the internet. We are concerned about your safety and have made sure that
you do not need to go outdoors in order to complete the tasks.

The BOP Framework

 A detailed conversation with your Faculty Mentor on phone or email about your career
aspirations and the BOP you choose to join;
 Checklist for tasks related to the project that you need to complete or areas you need to
talk with your faculty mentor;
 Sharing of your learning experiences periodically with the faculty mentor;
 Preparing and submitting a project report; and
 Making a presentation of your project during the Orientation Week in June 2020 on the
campus.

Suggested Projects
We offer you a choice of three projects. You can work on a project of your choice in the industry
sector and management function preferred by you and use the guidelines mentioned below:

1. My Dream Business
At times you may be flooded with ideas about setting up your own entrepreneurial venture. You
may now create a business plan about developing that idea of yours into reality. A business plan
is a formal statement of a set of business goals, the reasons why they are believed attainable, and
the plan for reaching those goals. It may also contain background information about the
organization or team attempting to reach those goals. It is a document mapping the company’s
future course of action and projections. While adherence to any structure is not compulsory, all
the relevant aspects such as business concept, vision, market opportunity, detailed competitive
analysis and the resources and finances required to implement the idea can be included. Relevant
financial projections can be included. Proposed management structure and relevant assumptions
may also be included.

2. Comprehensive Study of an NGO
We have today a new breed of entrepreneurs called as Sociopreneur, who are truly passionate
about a social cause and champion it to bring about a social change. These individuals are
willing to take on the risk and effort to create positive changes in society through their initiatives.
Movies like Padman have added more glamor to the industry. There are umpteen NGOs working
in the area of sustainability, women empowerment, child education, domestic violence, old age
homes, human rights, child trafficking etc. These are just a few examples and we are sure that the
list is immense.

Learning about these organizations shall help you appreciate the idea and to develop empathy
with the cause. We expect you to please visit the website of the NGO that you have chosen for
study. Learn about the founder and understand his reason for starting the venture, and note
his/her story and journey. Please elaborate on the scope of activity of the NGO, the way it has
brought about a social change. Also, find out if there are some more NGOs doing a similar work
like the NGO you chose to study. How does the NGO sustain itself in terms of funding and how
does it gather the support of people as volunteers to further the cause are a few questions that
may interest you. You may download pics from the internet to add more credibility to the
project. You are free to have your own checklist of the questions, however, these are a few
suggestive questions.
