MANAGING LABOR RELATIONS

Human Resource Management (HRM) is an organizational function that is responsible

for the strategic management of its people. The affiliation between a company and its human

resources department represents an honest partnership in today's competitive business world.

According to Encyclopedia (2021), interactions between workers and their employers, as

represented by labor unions, are referred to as labor-management relations. Labor unions are

groups of employers in specific industries, businesses, or groups of industries or companies that

work together to further the independent interests of their representatives. Well-managed labor

negotiations provide the company a strategic advantage by preventing the uncertainties that

occur from labor or union-related dilemmas and grievances.

Moreover, according to Marketing91 (2020), Labor relations refer to the processes

between management and labor unions, or between employers and employees, to make effective

decisions and regulate an organization. Additionally, Unionization of productive Laborers,

Handling of Disputes or Conflicts, Collective Bargaining Channelization, Adept Contract

Settlement, and Effective Contract Administration are the components of labor relations. Hence,

labor relations are equally essential to the efficient establishment and channelization of various

units that ensure employee loyalty, satisfaction, and retention.

As stated by FindLaw (2017), labor union is a group of employers who, in most cases,

work in the same industry. Regardless of scale, the union uses collective bargaining to negotiate

with employers to promote the desires of its members, which can provide higher wages,

employee compensation, and good working conditions. Additionally, according to Baptista (n.d),

the purpose of the Labor Union in the Philippines is to make people mindful of their rights and

responsibilities as members of the union and workers.

Furthermore, according to Doyle (2021), extensive negotiations between the organization

and employer leaders are known as collective bargaining. The specific goal is for effective

management and the union to negotiate a settlement on a contract that will be in operation for a

particular time frame. In addition, the Wagner Act of 1935 also known as the National Labor

Relations Act (NLRA) is under the Collective Bargaining Legislation in which the law provided

a mechanism for collective bargaining in addition to ensure workers' right to protest. It also

established the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) where in its purpose is to resolve the

labor issues.

On the other hand, as stated by Albertson (2014), the three (3) barriers to effective or

successful negotiation are viewing negotiations as a battle in which it is not enough to win or

lose in negotiations. We lose our capacity to empathize and recognize mutually beneficial results

as soon as we view the consumer as a competitor. Second, failing to ask enough question where

in the negotiator is limiting the conversation between the customer thus, creating a huge barrier

to achievement. Lastly, focusing on price in your negotiations, which the negotiators are

assuming that the price of the sale is the only matter to any customers.

Moreover, resolving impasses has been always the important thing in the workplace.

According to Grand Valley State University (2014), workplace conflict is a common and

unavoidable part of life. When this happens, there is a gradual decrease in morale, a rise in

disengagement, and a loss in productivity. Consequently, according to Staff (2020), there are

three types of disputes or conflict resolution. First is the mediation in which its purpose is for a

neutral third party to facilitate disputants in reaching their own agreement. Second, the

arbitration where in the arbitrator pays attention to each side's statements and arguments before
making a binding judgment. Lastly, the litigation, which the responsibility of the judge or jury is

to weigh the evidence and make a rule.

In conclusion, the best way to properly handle employer-employee relationship is through

labor-management relations. This statement remains accurate as the strategy is void of tension

from management toward workers, and employees' expressions of stress toward management are

respected. Additionally, employees are internal clients, and they must be reasonably satisfied.

Using labor relations would imply that workers are committed to providing their extensive effort.

Labor relations have improved as a result of the development of a human resource management

function. Hence, the management relationship style decreases, but not completely eliminate,

conflicts of interest.

Managing the Labor Relations in Human Resource Management department is very

much important in company and/or organization. However, the company, BMG Outsourcing,

does not practice this type of management. The reason why the company does not practice labor

union because they do not have union employees.
