University of Guyana Faculty of Engineering & Technology Department of Petroleum Engineering PEG1201: Reservoir Engineering For Technicians Student: Rayanna Ward USI:1045611 Lecturer: Miss Karen Bodoo Lab #:1 Due Date:5th April 2023 Lab #1 Aim To determine the recoverable reserves of an oil reservoir when given a well location map using Trapezoidal and Simpsons Rules as well as the following properties: . Porosity is 25% . Water Saturation, Sw is 30% . The oil formation Volume Factor, Boi is 1.210 res. bbl/stb + The recovery factor is 26% Procedure ‘A net pay isopach map was constructed by contouring the well location map in Figure 1 SketchandCale, | hour, free trial software (https://www.sketchandcal c.com/) was used to measure the areas enclosed by the contours in the net pay isopach map shown in Figure 1. Firstly, an image of the contoured map was uploaded to the software. Next, the appropriate scale was inputted. Then the area of the 0 contour line was measured twice. After which the area of the 20 contour line was measured twice. Lastly the area of the 40 contour line was measured twice. Each of the following was then calculated using (i) Trapezoidal and (ii) Simpson’s Rules: f Bulk volume . OOoIP . Recoverable reserves. Discussion A planimeter is a mathematical instrument for directly measuring the area bounded by an irregular curve. We use planimeters for the purpose of finding the area of irregular shapes since the area can’t be acquired through the same methods used for regularly shaped surfaces. The Bulk volume when using the Trapezoidal Rule is equal to 853669.63 Acres-Ft while the Bulk volume using Simson’s Rule is 844768.02 Acres-Ft. The Original Oil in Place when using the Trapezoidal Rule is 957.838 MMSTB while the Original Oil in Place using Simson’s Rule is 947.851 MMSTB. The Recoverable Reserves when using the trapezoidal Rule is 249.0380 MMSTB while the Recoverable Reserves using Simson’s Rule would be 246.441 MMSTB. Both methods produce accurate results, but the Simpsons Rule is more accurate than the Trapezoidal Rule. Simpson’s rule is used for integration in the plane, while the trapezoidal rule is used to calculate definite integrals. To be more precise, Simpson’s rule is a particular case of the Trapezoidal Rule where the number of subintervals n is 3. Precautions The area of the contour lines were taken more than once and the average of the results was used in order to provide a close to accurate reading Sources of Error While measuring the area using wwwsketchandcale the outline of the contour lines may not have been traced accurately due to the fact that a difficult drag-and-drop method was used. Conclusion The purpose of this lab was to determine the recoverable reserves of an oil reservoir when given a well location map using Trapezoidal and Simpsons Rules as well as the following properties: . Porosity is 25% + Water Saturation, Sw is 30% + The oil formation Volume Factor, Boi is 1.210 res. bbl/stb + The recovery factor is 26% Therefore it can be concluded that upon completion of all necessary calculation: the Recoverable Reserves of the oil reservoir would be 249.0380 MMSTB using the Trapezoidal Rule and 246.0380 MMSTB using the Simpson’s Rule.
