Title of Research

A Statistical Presentation on the heights of Grade 10 and 11 students.

3
Introduction

The researchers of this School Based Assessment were inquisitive about the heights of students,

which was resolved by them carrying out an investigation to evaluate the mean heights of the

students in grades 10 and 11, and to determine whether there is a difference in height between the

two classes. In doing so, the heights were obtained and presented on the frequency tables then

shown on a histogram graph.

The objectives of this SBA are to:

• Determine the average heights of students in grades 10.

• Determine the average heights of students in grade 11.

• Determine if the students in grade 10 are taller than those in grade 11.

To achieve the objectives, the researchers used a random selection method to obtain their data.

This data was then organized, presented, and analyzed.

4
Method of Data Collection

The title of the research is a Statistical Presentation on the heights of Grades’ 10 and 11 students.

The researchers are interested in the population of students found in grades’ 10 and 11. To

assemble data, the researchers decided to select a sample of 20 students each from both grades by

a method of random sampling. The researchers went around, measured, and recorded the heights

of the students selected. Subsequently, the data was organized and presented on tables and graphs.

In the tables above, the data gathered from this research is displayed. Each table shows the number

of students that have a height of the various ranges. In grade 10, 20% of the students account for

the height ranging from 150-159cm. The height range 160-169cm has 45% of the students falling

in this category. 15% of the students have a height ranging from 170-179 cm. Lastly, the 180-

189cm category, have 20% of the students.

In contrast, the students of grade 11, have a total of 20% in the 150-159cm height range whereas

the 160-169cm and 170-179cm, have 40% and 25% students respectively. Lastly, there are 15%

of students in the 180-189cm category.

The mean height of students in grade 10 is 168cm with a standard deviation of 10.1cm. Whereas

the mean height of students in grade 11 is 168cm with a standard deviation of 9.6cm.

The modal category of the students in grades 10 and 11, were both in the height range of 160cm-

169cm. On the contrary, the height range with the least number of students in grade 10 is the 170-

179 category. While the height range with the least number of students in grade 11 is the 180cm-

189cm category.

10
Discussion of Findings

In accordance with the information collected from this research, the grade 10 students have an

average height of 168 cm whereas the grade 11 students also have an average height of 168cm. It

was found that the highest height range of the grade 10 students would be from 160cm-169cm,

while the lowest was in the range of 170cm-179cm. Assessing the heights of the grade 11 students,

the highest height range would be from 160cm-169cm whereas the lowest would be from 180cm-

189cm.

When the two grades were compared the students of grade 10 and grade 11 had the same number

of students in the 150cm-159cm category. In the 160cm-169cm category, grade 10 had the greatest

number of students in comparison to grade 11. Grade 11 had a greater number of students in the

170cm-179cm category as apposed to grade 10. Lastly grade 10 had more students in the 180cm-

189cm category than grade 11.

11
Conclusion

From the investigation it can be seen that the average height of grade 10 students is 168cm. For

the grade 11 students the average height would also be 168cm.

After concluding this investigation, it can be said that the heights of the grade 10 students are

greater than those of the grade 11 students, since the standard deviation for grade 10 is 10.1cm

while the standard deviation for grade 11 is 9.6cm.
