There are lots of form four students within the Toco Secondary School. I was interested in
finding out if some students will meet the height requirements to join the Police Service. The aim
was to select thirty (30) students to see if they have met the height requirements to become a
police officer. The height requirements for entry for males is 167 cm and for the females is 150
cm. The objectives will be to calculate the mean, median and mode heights of form 4 students to
determine which gender can apply to the Police Service.

METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION

A form 4 class was chosen randomly for this SBA. There are 15 boys and 15 girls who
volunteered to help with the survey. During a lunch time period at school, the students were each
asked a simple question “Can you tell me what your height is?’’The heights were taken in
centimeters and a measuring tape was used to measure heights if the students did not know their
heights. The survey only took fifteen minutes to complete and the data was also recorded for
further use.

ANALYSIS OF DATA

The mean male height =

=
= 180.03cm

The modal male height = 170 – 179cm

The median male height position lies in the 8th place
Median = 170 – 179cm

The mean female height =

=
= 165.17cm

The modal female height = 160 – 169cm

The median female height position lies in the 8th place

Median = 160 – 169cm

DISCUSSION OF FINDINGS

The collected data revealed that the mean height for the males were 180.03 cm and the median
heights was170 – 179cm. The mean height for the females was 165.17 cm and the median was
160 - 169cm. The modal heights were 170 – 179cm and 160 – 169cm, males and females
respectively. This is stating that the majority of the form 4 males are taller than the females. The
entry height requirements for the males is 167.cm and females is 150cm.When compared to the
mean, mode and median both genders were tall enough to apply to the Police Service if the
students want to.

CONCLUSION
From my investigation results and analysis, both the Form 4 male and female students can apply
to the Police Service because the mean, median and modal values for males and females met the
entry height requirements of 167cm and 150cm respectively.
