INTRODUCTION

For this project we were assigned to study the walking patterns of our classmates and try
to answer one question relating to a gait analysis. For this project we chose to try and
figure out how height relates to how people walk. We will conduct this experiment by

1
measuring people’s body parts such as leg length, foot length, leg proportions, etc. We
will also measure the g-force of walking to compare the force of peoples steps in relation
to how tall they are.

HYPOTHESIS

We believe it’s possible to estimate a person’s height based on their gait data. We predict
that people who are taller take longer strides and walk with more force.

MATERIALS

1. Tape measure
2. Physics Toolbox App on phone
3. Blue tape, duct tape
4. Fanny pack
5. People

PROCEDURE/METHOD

1. Measured out five meters with and lined it with tape

2. Decided to figure out lengths of our bodies
3. Measured out lengths and wrote down the data
4. Taken the G-force of the stepping motion
5. Analyze data
6. Create a Gantt Chart

RESULTS

Our data seems to show that taller people have the longest stride length and take fewer
steps than shorter people. Also, as you can tell from our graph, people who are taller
tend to walk with more force than those shorter people.

Height in relation to stride length: height= 1.15(stride length)+119.7

Our equation estimates the height of a human by taking their stride length in cm,
multiplying it by a factor of 1.15, and then adding 119.7 cm. This equation was found

DISCUSSION

Through this lab we found out that we can predict people's height based on their stride
length. Using the equation we found, we can estimate someone's height based on their
stride length. We also found that people who are taller tend to take longer strides. We
found a correlation between stride length and found the slope for our equation. We also
found that people who are taller walk with more force. If you were to look at our graphs
below that analyze the force people walk with, you can tell that the taller people tested
walk with more force.

CONCLUSION/ABSTRACT

Our data led us to conclude that taller people tend to take longer strides than shorter
people. This was in line with our hypothesis, and we now can estimate the height of
someone based on factors such as their stride length. This data might not accurately
predict the height of others because we only had a sample size of four individuals, and
the outcomes of our small data set might not reflect that of a larger population. The data
does, however, allow us to generally assume the average height of someone with a
certain stride length. We have calculated the variability of our predictions based on an
equation we created for the line of best fit. This variability can be seen in the data
section, where we put actual and predicted height based on stride length side by side.
