MODULE 5:
Data Management
March 17 to March 22, 2021

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the lesson, you must be able to:

1. Perform operations of the three measures of central tendency for grouped data.

INTRODUCTION:
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master the concepts on how to
perform the different statistical tools to process and manage numerical data. It is here where you can perform operations
on the three Measures of Mentral tendency for Grouped Data.

Engage Review:

 How to organize set of data?Why is it neccessary for us to organize the data set?

Explore  Compare and contrast the three measures of central tendency.

Explain
THE 3 MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY OF GROUPED DATA

1. MEAN
∑ 𝒇𝑿𝒎
Formula: 𝑴𝒏 =
𝑵

where; 𝑀𝑛 = 𝑚𝑒𝑎𝑛
𝑓 = 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑦
𝑋𝑚 = 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑚𝑎𝑟𝑘
𝑁 = 𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑦

Example # 1: The table below summarizes the weights of the cubs. Find the average weight of the cubs.

Weights of the Cubs

Weight frequency
201 – 210 3
191 – 200 8
181 – 190 12
171 – 180 11
161 – 170 9
151 – 160 2
Solution:
In solving the mean for grouped data, we have to add two columns for class marks (𝑋𝑚 ) and 𝑓𝑋𝑚
MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN WORLD
Weight f 𝑿𝒎 𝒇𝑿𝒎
201 – 210 3 205.5 616.5
191 – 200 8 195.5 1,564.0
181 – 190 12 185.5 2,226.0
171 – 180 11 175.5 1930.5
161 – 170 9 165.5 1,489.5
151 – 160 2 155.5 311.0
𝑁 = 45 ∑ 𝑓𝑋𝑚 = 8,137.5
Substitute:
∑ 𝑓𝑋
𝑚 8,137.5
𝑀𝑛 = = = 180.33
𝑁 45
Therefore, the average weight of the cubs is 180.33.

2. MEDIAN
∑𝒇
− <𝒄𝒇
Formula: 𝑴𝒅 = 𝑳𝑩𝒎𝒄 + [ 𝟐 ]𝒊
𝒇𝒎𝒄

where; 𝑀𝑑 = 𝑚𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛
𝐿𝐵𝑚𝑐 = 𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 𝑏𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠
< 𝑐𝑓 = 𝑐𝑢𝑚𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑦 𝑏𝑒𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠
𝑓𝑚𝑐 = 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠
𝑖 = 𝑠𝑖𝑧𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑣𝑎𝑙

Example # 2: Solve for the median.

18 – 19 6
16 – 17 8
14 – 15 6
12 – 13 10
10 – 11 14
Solution:
In solving the median for grouped data, we have to add another column for cumulative frequency (< 𝑐𝑓)

MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN WORLD

Given: 𝐿𝐵𝑚𝑐 = 𝐿𝐿 − 0.5 = 14 − 0.5 = 13.5
< 𝑐𝑓 = 24
𝑓𝑚𝑐 = 6
𝑖=2

Substitute to the formula:

∑𝒇
− <𝒄𝒇
𝟐
𝑴𝒅 = 𝑳𝑩𝒎𝒄 + [ ]𝒊
𝒇𝒎𝒄
𝟑𝟎 − 𝟐𝟒
𝑴𝒅 = 𝟏𝟑. 𝟓 + [ ]𝟐
𝟔
𝟔
𝑴𝒅 = 𝟏𝟑. 𝟓 +[ ]𝟐
𝟔
𝑴𝒅 = 𝟏𝟑. 𝟓 + (𝟏)𝟐
𝑴𝒅 = 𝟏𝟑. 𝟓 + 𝟐
𝑴𝒅 = 𝟏𝟓. 𝟓

Therefore, 50% of the students got a score below 15.5, or if the passing score is 50% of the total number
of items, almost half of the class failed on the test.

3. MODE
𝑫𝟏
Formula: 𝑴𝒐 = 𝑳𝑩𝒎𝒐 + [ ]𝒊
𝑫𝟏 +𝑫𝟐

where; 𝑀𝑜 = 𝑚𝑜𝑑𝑒
𝐿𝐵𝑚𝑜 = 𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 𝑏𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑜𝑑𝑎𝑙 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠
𝐷1 = 𝑑𝑖𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑏𝑒𝑡𝑤𝑒𝑒𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑜𝑑𝑎𝑙 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑛𝑒𝑥𝑡 𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠
𝐷2 = 𝑑𝑖𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑏𝑒𝑡𝑤𝑒𝑒𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑜𝑑𝑎𝑙 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑛𝑒𝑥𝑡 𝑢𝑝𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠
𝑖 = 𝑠𝑖𝑧𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑣𝑎𝑙

Example # 3: Solve for the mode.

Statistics Test Results
Scores frequency
28 – 29 1
26 – 27 3
24 – 25 3
22 – 23 3
20 – 21 6
18 – 19 6
16 – 17 8
14 – 15 6
12 – 13 10
10 – 11 14 modal class

Solution:
Given: 𝐿𝐵𝑚𝑜 = 𝐿𝐿 − 0.5 = 10 − 0.5 = 9.5
𝐷1 = 14 − 0 = 14
𝐷2 = 14 − 10 = 4
𝑖=2

Substitute the given to the formula:

MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN WORLD

𝑫𝟏
𝑴𝒐 = 𝑳𝑩𝒎𝒐 + [ ]𝒊
𝑫𝟏 +𝑫𝟐
𝟏𝟒
𝑴𝒐 = 𝟗. 𝟓 + [ ]𝟐
𝟏𝟒+𝟒
𝟏𝟒
𝑴𝒐 = 𝟗. 𝟓 + [ ]𝟐
𝟏𝟖
𝑴𝒐 = 𝟗. 𝟓 + 𝟏. 𝟓𝟔 Always, round it off to two decimal places
𝑴𝒐 = 𝟏𝟏. 𝟎𝟔
