Let’s Explore and Discover
Unlocking of Difficulties
Evolution is a change in the inheritable traits within a certain
population across generations.
Variation refers to the differences in characteristics between individuals
of the same species.
Theories of Evolution
1
Darwinian Theory
Charles Darwin Fifty years after Lamarck’s Theory of Use and Disuse,

Collier, Charles Darwin, his voyage to the Galapagos Island in HMS Beagle. He was
https://bit.ly/2LFAbaw. fascinated by the diversity he found along the journey.
In Galapagos Island, he observed that finch species have
different beak structures for different food types. The abundance of certain finch species in
an island was somehow related to the type of available food for these birds.

Darwin suggested that selection also takes place in nature. In selective breeding,
farmer identifies and selects the best and desirable trait to propagate. In natural selection,
environmental factors promote the survival of the fittest and eliminates the less fit.
Organisms struggle for existence in order to survive; they compete for food and space.
Organisms with favorable and advantageous characteristics survive and reproduce. Fitness
refers to the ability of an organism to survive and produce offsprings.
Variation among individuals in the population would likely bring greater chance of
survival. An organism that is adapted and has structures fitted to survive in a given
environment would likely produce offsprings.

Let’s Practice
Directions: Identify which of the given theories were developed by Lamarck and
Darwin. Write it in the table.
FILL ME UP!
Directions: Fill in the blanks with the correct word/s to complete the statement.

Let’s Do More

Let’s Sum It Up
Directions: Complete the statements below by filling in with phrases pertaining to the
occurrence of evolution.
Let’s Assess
Direction: Read the statements carefully. Write TRUE if the statement is correct and
FALSE if the statement is incorrect.
_________ 1. The change in the inheritable traits within a certain population across
generations is called variation.
_________ 2. Lamarck’s Theory of Use and Disuse explains that organs not in use will
develop while organs in use will disappear.
_________ 3. Theory of Need states that organism change in response to their environment.
_________ 4. Organisms with favorable and advantageous characteristics survive and
reproduce.
________ 5. Fitness refers to the ability of an organism to survive and produce offspring.
_________ 6. Environmental factors promote the survival of the fittest.
_________ 7. Acquired characteristics are inherited by the offspring and propagated by the
next generations.
_________ 8. Evolution refers to the differences in characteristics between individuals of
the same species.
_________ 9. Jean Baptiste de Lamarck suggested the Theory of Natural Selection.
________ 10. An organism that is adapted and has structures fitted to survive in a given
environment would likely produce offspring.
