Now, you’re ready to start telling your
story!

Just like this template, most picture

books have 32 pages (although board
books for children 1-3 may have fewer).
Each set of pages is a spread.

A spread can contain one continuous

illustration, like so.
Or the illustrations can be totally (Like on these two pages.)
separate.
Each page should have one to two
sentences of text…

……Or less!
By breaking up your text, you can get a
clear sense of what should be
illustrated. Pick out the settings,
characters, and actions to highlight.

In the process, you’ll figure out how

many double vs. single-page
illustrations you’ll need.
Experimenting with this template can
also help you edit your book.

Wondering how long your story should

be?
Most picture books are under 500
words.

Don’t be surprised if you need to edit

your story to fit it onto 32 pages!
(Psst..an editor can help.)
You can also use this template to
experiment.

Start imagining how text and images

will play together. Remember: a

Maybe some of your pages don’t have
any text and let the images speak for
themselves.
Most picture books will end on The End
page 30 to make room for the
author bio and any other back
matter.
