B CULTURE PRESENTATION Adam Horáček, Filip Holík

1. American frontier (Old West, Wild West)

2. We find culture interesting, whether it is the style of dressing, the way

of life and the environment. We have been dealing with it since we
were young through movies, and we loved playing cowboys and
Indians as kids. It has always intrigued us, so we'd like to learn more
about it.

3. A:
Billy the Kid – outlaw and gunfighter
Buffalo Bill – soldier, bison hunter and showman
Jesse James – outlaw, bank and train robber, guerrilla and leader of
the James–Younger Gang

B:
Cody, Wyoming (e.g., Old Trail Town)
Deadwood, South Dakota (e.g., Saloon No. 10)
Tombstone, Arizona (e.g., OK Corral, Boothill Graveyard,
The Birdcage Theatre, Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park)

C:
The food and especially the clothes are very typical for this culture,
so it will not be a problem to present it to the class. We will show it
in period photos, and we will also come with clothes.
Food: beans, hard biscuits, dried meat, dried fruit, and coffee
Fashion: The basic Old West cowboy attire the wide-brimmed hat,
an ordinary shirt worn beneath a cowboy vest and waistcoat, the
cotton or wool trousers, covered halfway with the leather chaps, the
distinct tall boots with spurs, and the oversized silk handkerchief
worn around the neck. Women wore typical Victorian dresses.

D:
Our beliefs about them:
Cowboys were always heroic and moral.
The West was a place of lawlessness.
Gunslingers were quick on the draw.
Native Americans were always the villains.
Women were passive and helpless.
