STUDENT ORIENTATION OUTLINE FOR CLINICAL DUTY

I. Clinical Instructor
State complete name of clinical instructor and how he/she should be addressed. Discuss about expectations.

II. Schedule of Duty


Check student list and strictly follow rotation schedule. There are 4 days duty per area, twice a week for 2
consecutive weeks. Always notify level coordinator for any concerns. During class suspensions, level coordinator
will inform the clinical instructors and students.

III. Area Orientation


A. Tour students to the area including vacant room, nurse’s station, emergency/fire exit, comfort rooms , students’
conference room, and physical set-up.
B. Do courtesy call to and introduction of head nurse and staff nurses, nursing aide, orderly, and ward clerk.
C. Orient students on:
1. Names of residents and consultants frequent in the area for referral.
2. Kardex, Medex, and other forms and documentation/charting guidelines.
3. Ward policies and guidelines
4. Bed capacity and common cases admitted.
5. Common drugs and treatment procedures in the area.
6. Crash cart.
D. Ask if there are other concerns.

IV. Student Performance and Attitude


A. Basic bedside skills and attitude. See Performance and Attitude Checklists.
o Vital signs, bed-making, patient hygiene, comfort and safety measures, intake and output, IV regulation,
medication administration, and others.
o For delivery room and newborn service unit, review skills on vaginal delivery and immediate newborn care
based on EINC protocol.
B. Primary nursing 1:1, there must be close supervision of clinical instructor and/or staff nurse.
C. Student and faculty contract on carrying out patient care, medications, treatments, health teaching. No
medication/treatment/documentation should be done without the knowledge and presence of the Clinical
Instructor and/or Staff Nurse.

V. Requirements and Grading Criteria

A. OBSTETRIC and PEDIATRIC WARD (OB Charity, Pedia Charity, 3A, 3B, 4B)
Day 1 to Day 3 – at the area, actual clinical practice
Day 4 – at school for group case presentation and quiz, to reserve room c/o Ma’am Marilyn Bumanglag

Case Study* 25%
1. Individual paper
With written output, to be submitted on day 3 of duty. Choose any obstetric or pediatric
case. See guidelines below.
2. Group case presentation
No written output, but need to prepare visual aids for reporting. Just choose one
individual case to present on the last day of duty.
Research Journal** 10%
Chosen topic should align with individual case study. A written output will be submitted
on day 3 of duty together with the individual case study. Also, an oral discussion or
sharing of each journal must be done either during duty or during case presentation.
Charting (FDAR, done every day for 3 days to be submitted at the end of shift.) 10%

This is a total of 35 points. Chosen topic should be on delivery or newborn. A written output
will be submitted on day 2 of duty. Also, an oral discussion or sharing of each journal must
be done all throughout the duty.

VI. Reminders on College Policies


A. Be strict with attendance. Come on time and dismiss students on time. Be familiar on school’s policy on lates, late absences, excused
or unexcused absences, demerits, repeat rotation, and make-up duties. Do not forget to always notify level adviser on attendance of
students.
B. Always check proper grooming and uniform.
C. Randomly check paraphernalia.
D. Follow break time protocol.
E. Record and file student offenses or demerits. Always inform level adviser about these matters.
F. Be guided with other school policies and regulations as stated in student handbook.
