Distillation is one of the oldest and still most common methods for both the purification and
the identification of organic liquids. It is a physical process used to separate chemicals from a mixture
by the difference in how easily they vaporize. As the mixture is heated, the temperature rises until it
reaches the temperature of the lowest boiling substance in the mixture, while the other components
of the mixture remain in their original phase in the mixture. The resultant hot vapor passes into a
condenser and is converted to the liquid, which is then collected in a receiver flask. The other
components of the mixture remain in their original phase until the most volatile substance has all
boiled off. Only then does the temperature of the gas phase rises again until it reaches the boiling
point of a second component in the mixture, and so on.
The boiling point of a substance, which is determined by distillation, is a useful physical
property for the characterization of pure compounds.
At any given temperature a liquid is in equilibrium with its vapor. This equilibrium is
described by the vapor pressure of the liquid. The vapor pressure is the pressure that the molecules
at the surface of the liquid exert against the external pressure, which is usually the atmospheric
pressure. The vapor pressure is a very sensitive function of temperature. It does not increase linearly
but in fact, increases exponentially with temperature. The vapor pressure of a substance roughly
doubles for every increase by 10 °C, Figure 1.
When the vapor pressure of the liquid equals the applied pressure, the liquid boils. Thus, the
boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which the vapor pressure equals the applied pressure.
The normal boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which the vapor pressure of a liquid equals
atmospheric pressure (1 atm). The boiling point of a liquid is a measure of its volatility.
Not all mixtures of liquids obey Raoult’s law, such mixtures; called azeotropes, mimic the
boiling behavior of pure liquids. These mixtures when present at specific concentrations usually distill
at a constant boiling temperature and cannot be separated by distillation. Examples of such mixtures
are 95% ethanol-5% water (bp 78.1 °C).
In this experiment, you will perform several distillations. You will design the distillations of
impure ethanol, and a mixture of acetone and toluene using the glassware set-up for a simple
distillation and one for fractional distillation, respectively.
1. Assemble a simple distillation apparatus as shown in Fig 2, using a 100 mL Wurtz flask as the
pot and 50 mL Erlenmeyer flasks as the receiver.
2. Place a few boiling chips into the pot.
3. Add 25 mL of impure ethanol into the pot using a glass funnel, taking care not to spill the
chemicals onto the flask heater.
4. Check the position of the thermometer (the bulb of the thermometer must be below the arm of
the distillation head) and make sure that the bottom of the flask touches the heating surface of
the heating mantle.
5. Turn on the heating mantle to heat your distillation apparatus.
6. Heat the mixture. Adjust the heater to produce distillate at a rate of about 1‐2 drops per second.
7. Record the stable temperature (boiling point). Continue the distillation until fewer than 2-3 mL
of liquid remains in the pot.
8. Record the volume and the weight of this distillate. Calculate its density.
9. Turn off the heater. Allow the pot to cool for a few minutes.
During this period, you will carry out the separation of 50 mL of a mixture of acetone and toluene
using a fractional distillation apparatus.
1. Assemble your fractional distillation apparatus as shown in Fig. 3 (the bulb of the thermometer
must be below the arm of the distillation head). The distillation head should be covered with a
piece of cloth or paper towel to accurately record the temperature. The fractionating column
should also be covered.
2. Take 50 mL of the distillation mixture and pour it into a 100 mL Vigreux flask. Add a few boiling
chips and attach the flask to the Liebig condenser.
3. Heating the distilling flask slowly. Turn the heater control to a minimum.
4. When the vapor temperature has risen 56–70°C, collect the first distillate (F1). Stopper it
promptly to prevent evaporation.
5. When the vapor temperature has risen 70–100°C, collect the second distillate (F2) and stopper
it.
6. Finally, when the vapor temperature has risen 100–111°C, collect the last distillate (F3).
Continue the distillation until fewer than 2-3 mL of liquid remains in the Vigreux flask.
7. Turn off the heater and allow the Vigreux flask to cool until reaches room temperature.
8. Again, assemble your fractional distillation apparatus with the distillate F1 and F3.
9. With fraction F1, when the vapor temperature has risen 56–62 °C,* collect this distillate. It was
considered “pure” acetone.
10. And with fraction F3, when the vapor temperature has risen 105–110 °C,* collect this distillate.
It was considered as “pure” toluene.
11. Record the volume and the weight of these distillates. Calculate their density values.

Actual temperature could be differed due to the low accuracy of the alcohol thermometer.
