Branwell’s inner monologue after being rejected from the Royal Academy of Arts:
It makes me feel ambitious to have a job I really want to do
every day, waking up every morning and knowing it’s all worthwhile. You don’t always get that though, what you see is what you get. Sometimes you must work up to it like exercise, don’t run before you can walk. It’s not always handed to you on a plate, it’s just what happens. When I’m rejected, I feel like an angry ball of steam, tensing and ready to blow. Pompous pricks, they wouldn’t know art if it hit them in the face. Choosing another path isn’t always what you want to hear but it can be taken in your best interests. Seeking comfort from your loved ones and being in their world can be worthwhile, priceless. I’m going to step into their shoes, I want to do what they do.
