4, 1 Λαλούντων δὲ αὐτῶν 1
πρὸς τὸν λαὸν ἐπέστησαν2 αὐτοῖς3 οἱ ἱερεῖς καὶ ὁ στρατηγὸς τοῦ ἱεροῦ
καὶ οἱ Σαδδουκαῖοι,
 Now while they were speaking to the people, come upon /approached them the priests and
officer of the temple and the Sadducees.
2 διαπονούμενοι4 διὰ5 τὸ διδάσκειν αὐτοὺς τὸν λαὸν καὶ καταγγέλλειν ἐν τῷ Ἰησοῦ6 τὴν ἀνάστασιν
τὴν ἐκ νεκρῶν,
 Being greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the
resurrection of the dead,
3 καὶ ἐπέβαλον αὐτοῖς7 τὰς χεῖρας8 καὶ ἔθεντο9 εἰς τήρησιν10 εἰς τὴν αὔριον·11 ἦν γὰρ ἑσπέρα ἤδη.
 They laid hands on them [arrested] and put them in custody/prison until the next day. It was
for evening already.
4  πολλοὶ δὲ τῶν ἀκουσάντων12 τὸν λόγον  ἐπίστευσαν13 καὶ ἐγενήθη [ὁ] ἀριθμὸς τῶν ἀνδρῶν [ὡς]
χιλιάδες πέντε.
 However, many of those who heard the word believed: and the number of the men came to
be about five thousand.
5 Ἐγένετο δὲ  ἐπὶ τὴν αὔριον  συναχθῆναι αὐτῶν τοὺς ἄρχοντας14 καὶ τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους καὶ τοὺς
γραμματεῖς ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ,
 And it came to pass to come together, on the next day, that their rulers, elders, and scribes,

6 καὶ  Ἅννας ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς καὶ Καϊάφας καὶ Ἰωάννης καὶ Ἀλέξανδρος καὶ ὅσοι ἦσαν ἐκ γένους
ἀρχιερατικοῦ15,
 As well as Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and as many as were of
the family of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem.

7 καὶ στήσαντες16 αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ μέσῳ ἐπυνθάνοντο· ἐν ποίᾳ δυνάμει17 ἢ ἐν ποίῳ ὀνόματι


ἐποιήσατε τοῦτο ὑμεῖς;

 And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, "By what power or by what name
have you done this?"

8 Τότε  Πέτρος  πλησθεὶς18 πνεύματος ἁγίου19 εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· ἄρχοντες τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ
πρεσβύτεροι,
 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders of
Israel:
9 εἰ  ἡμεῖς  σήμερον  ἀνακρινόμεθα ἐπὶ εὐεργεσίᾳ ἀνθρώπου20 ἀσθενοῦς ἐν τίνι [sottinteso onómati]
οὗτος σέσωται21,
 "If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a sick man, by what means he has been
made well/healed/saved.
10 γνωστὸν ἔστω πᾶσιν ὑμῖν καὶ παντὶ τῷ λαῷ Ἰσραὴλ ὅτι  ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι22 Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ
Ναζωραίου ὃν ὑμεῖς ἐσταυρώσατε, ὃν ὁ θεὸς ἤγειρεν ἐκ νεκρῶν, ἐν τούτῳ23 οὗτος  παρέστηκεν24
ἐνώπιον ὑμῶν ὑγιής.
 "Let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ
of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands
here before you.
11 οὗτός25  ἐστιν ὁ λίθος, ὁ ἐξουθενηθεὶς26 ὑφʼ ὑμῶν τῶν οἰκοδόμων, ὁ γενόμενος εἰς κεφαλὴν
γωνίας27.

 "This is the stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief
cornerstone.

12 καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ἄλλῳ οὐδενὶ28 ἡ σωτηρία, οὐδὲ γὰρ29 ὄνομά ἐστιν ἕτερον ὑπὸ τὸν οὐρανὸν τὸ
δεδομένον30 ἐν ἀνθρώποις ἐν ᾧ δεῖ σωθῆναι31 ἡμᾶς.

 Nor is there salvation in non one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among
men by which we would to be saved.
13 Θεωροῦντες δὲ τὴν τοῦ Πέτρου παρρησίαν καὶ Ἰωάννου καὶ καταλαβόμενοι32 ὅτι ἄνθρωποι
ἀγράμματοί εἰσιν καὶ ἰδιῶται, ἐθαύμαζον ἐπεγίνωσκόν τε33 αὐτοὺς ὅτι σὺν τῷ Ἰησοῦ ἦσαν,

 Now when they saw the boldness/courage of Peter and John, and perceived that they were
uneducated and untrained/idiots men, they marvelled. And they realized that they had been
with Jesus.

 but seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they are nothing to say in
opposition.

15 κελεύσαντες37 δὲ αὐτοὺς ἔξω τοῦ συνεδρίου ἀπελθεῖν38 συνέβαλλον πρὸς ἀλλήλους

 But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among
themselves,
16 λέγοντες· τί ποιήσωμεν39 τοῖς ἀνθρώποις τούτοις; ὅτι μὲν γὰρ γνωστὸν σημεῖον γέγονεν διʼ
αὐτῶν  πᾶσιν τοῖς κατοικοῦσιν40 Ἰερουσαλὴμ φανερὸν καὶ οὐ δυνάμεθα ἀρνεῖσθαι·

 saying, “What shall we do to these men? Because indeed a notable miracle has happened
through them, as can be plainly seen by all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we can’t deny it.

17 ἀλλʼ  ἵνα μὴ ἐπὶ πλεῖον διανεμηθῇ41 εἰς τὸν λαὸν  ἀπειλησώμεθα42 αὐτοῖς μηκέτι λαλεῖν ἐπὶ τῷ
ὀνόματι43 τούτῳ μηδενὶ ἀνθρώπων44.

 But in order that this may not spread further among the people, let us warn them not to
speak in this name any more with anyone."

18 Καὶ καλέσαντες αὐτοὺς παρήγγειλαν τὸ καθόλου μὴ φθέγγεσθαι45 μηδὲ διδάσκειν ἐπὶ τῷ


ὀνόματι τοῦ Ἰησοῦ.
 So, having called they commanded them all no to pronounce nor teach in the name of Jesus.

19  ὁ δὲ Πέτρος καὶ Ἰωάννης  ἀποκριθέντες εἶπον πρὸς αὐτούς·  εἰ δίκαιόν ἐστιν ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ
ὑμῶν ἀκούειν μᾶλλον ἢ τοῦ θεοῦ, κρίνατε46·

 Peter and John responded and said to them, "Is it right before God to obey you rather than
God? You be the judge!

20 οὐ δυνάμεθα γὰρ ἡμεῖς ἃ47 εἴδαμεν καὶ ἠκούσαμεν μὴ λαλεῖν.


 For we cannot stop speaking of what we have seen and heard.

 Then, after threatening them more, they released them because they could not find a way to
punish them, on account of the people, since everyone was glorifying God because of what
had happened.

 For the man on whom this sign of healing had been performed had been (crippled) for more
than forty years!

23 Ἀπολυθέντες55 δὲ ἦλθον πρὸς τοὺς ἰδίους56 καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν ὅσα  πρὸς αὐτοὺς  οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ
οἱ πρεσβύτεροι εἶπαν.

 Being released, they came to their own and reported all that the chief priests and the elders
had said to them.
24  οἱ 57 δὲ ἀκούσαντες ὁμοθυμαδὸν58 ἦραν59 φωνὴν πρὸς τὸν θεὸν καὶ εἶπαν· δέσποτα,  σὺ ὁ
ποιήσας60 τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ τὴν γῆν καὶ τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐν αὐτοῖς,

 Those who heard it with one purpose lifted up a voice to God and said: ‘’O Lord, who made
[lit. l’avente fatto] the heaven, the earth, the sea and all that are in them
25  ὁ τοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν  διὰ πνεύματος ἁγίου στόματος Δαυὶδ παιδός σου εἰπών· ἱνατί61 ἐφρύαξαν
ἔθνη καὶ λαοὶ  ἐμελέτησαν κενά62;
 who by the mouth of our father David your servant, through the Holy Spirit, having spoken:
«Why the nations did rage, and the people conspired in vain? ».

26 παρέστησαν63 οἱ βασιλεῖς τῆς γῆς καὶ  οἱ ἄρχοντες  συνήχθησαν ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ64 κατὰ τοῦ κυρίου

 The kings of the earth appeared before, and the leaders gathered together in the same place
against the Lord and [against] his Christ.

 Truly, in this city Herod, both and Pontius Pilate with the gentiles and the people of Israel
gathered together against your holy servant Jesus whom you anointed,

 [while you stretch out] by extending your hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be
done through the name of your holy Servant Jesus.”
31 καὶ δεηθέντων81 αὐτῶν ἐσαλεύθη ὁ τόπος ἐν ᾧ ἦσαν συνηγμένοι, καὶ ἐπλήσθησαν ἅπαντες τοῦ
ἁγίου πνεύματος82 καὶ ἐλάλουν83 τὸν λόγον τοῦ θεοῦ μετὰ παρρησίας.

 When they had prayed, the place in they gathered together was shaken. They were all filled
with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.
32  Τοῦ δὲ πλήθους τῶν πιστευσάντων84  ἦν καρδία καὶ ψυχὴ μία, καὶ οὐδὲ εἷς τι τῶν ὑπαρχόντων
αὐτῷ85 ἔλεγεν ἴδιον εἶναι ἀλλʼ  ἦν αὐτοῖς ἅπαντα86 κοινά.

 The multitude of those who believed were of one heart and soul. Not ever one was saying
that anything of his possession/property is his own, but everything was their in common.

Encouragement), a Levite, a man of Cyprus.

 having a field, sold it, and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira, his wife, sold a possession,

τοὺς πόδας τῶν ἀποστόλων ἔθηκεν.
 and kept back part of the price, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part,
and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
3 εἶπεν δὲ ⸂ὁ Πέτρος· Ἁνανία, διὰ τί104 ἐπλήρωσεν ὁ σατανᾶς τὴν καρδίαν σου, ψεύσασθαί σε τὸ
πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον105 καὶ106 νοσφίσασθαι ἀπὸ τῆς τιμῆς τοῦ χωρίου107;

 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie the Holy Spirit, and to keep
back part of the price of the land?

 While you kept it, didn’t it remain your own? After it was sold, wasn’t it your? How is it

5 ἀκούων δὲ ὁ Ἁνανίας  τοὺς λόγους τούτους πεσὼν111 ἐξέψυξεν, καὶ ἐγένετο φόβος μέγας ἐπὶ
πάντας τοὺς ἀκούοντας.
 Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed no more. [died]. Great fear came on
all who heard these things.
6 ἀναστάντες δὲ οἱ νεώτεροι συνέστειλαν αὐτὸν καὶ ἐξενέγκαντες112 ἔθαψαν.

 The young men arose and wrapped him up, and they carried him out and buried him.
7 Ἐγένετο δὲ ὡς ὡρῶν τριῶν113 διάστημα114 καὶ ἡ γυνὴ αὐτοῦ  μὴ εἰδυῖα115 τὸ γεγονὸς116 εἰσῆλθεν.

 About three hours later, his wife, not knowing what had happened, came in.
8 ἀπεκρίθη δὲ πρὸς αὐτὴν Πέτρος, εἰπέ117 μοι, εἰ τοσούτου118 τὸ χωρίον ἀπέδοσθε;  ἡ  δὲ εἶπεν· Nαί,
τοσούτου.
 Peter answered her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much.” She said, “Yes, for so
much.”
9  ὁ δὲ Πέτρος  πρὸς αὐτήν· τί ὅτι συνεφωνήθη ὑμῖν119 πειράσαι120 τὸ πνεῦμα κυρίου; ἰδοὺ οἱ πόδες
τῶν θαψάντων τὸν ἄνδρα σου ἐπὶ τῇ θύρᾳ καὶ ἐξοίσουσίν121 σε.

 But Peter asked her, “How is it that you have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the
Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will
carry you out.”

10 ἔπεσεν δὲ παραχρῆμα πρὸς τοὺς πόδας122 αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐξέψυξεν· εἰσελθόντες δὲ οἱ νεανίσκοι
εὗρον αὐτὴν νεκρὰν καὶ ἐξενέγκαντες ἔθαψαν πρὸς τὸν ἄνδρα αὐτῆς,

 She fell down immediately at his feet and breathed her last. The young men came in and
found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her by her husband.
