SOCCER IN ECUADOR

1. The history of soccer in Ecuador

They were two Guayaquil brothers Juan Alfredo Wright and Roberto Wright, who

founded the first club of soccer. These young people formed a club with the idea that its

members could participate in the distractions that existed in Europe, and that is how the

Guayaquil Sport Club was founded on April 23th, 1899. Starting the practice of soccer, which

was played with a ball and pushed with the feet towards two rectangular arches. On July

22nd, 1902 “Club Sport Ecuador” was founded, wearing a blue shirt and white pants. Later,

new teams appeared. Also, in Quito in 1906 soccer arrives and several teams are formed, such

as Olmedo and Gladiador. In 1908 the Club Sport Patria was formed in Guayaquil, and also in

that year the first tournament played in Ecuador was organized. Then, in 1922 Manuel

Seminario promoted the founding of the Guayaquil Sports Federation, which went on to

organize the official championship, and in 1925 managed to enter FIFA. Finally, in 1925

Seminario promoted the foundation of the National Sports Federation of Ecuador, after

organizing the federations of Pichincha, Tungurahua, Azuay and Los Ríos, the same one that

in January 1926 began to appear as a member of FIFA (Paguay, s\f).

2. Concept of Soccer

Sport that is practiced between two teams of eleven players, who try to introduce a ball

into the opponent's goal by propelling it with their feet, head or any part of the body, except

the hands and arms. In team there is a goalkeeper, who can touch the ball with his hands,

although only inside the area. The team that scores the most goals during the 90 minutes of

the match wins (Ramírez, 2015).

3. Characteristics of Soccer

Soccer is considered as an acyclical sport, with intermittent motor characteristics, open

skills; of great complexity in comparison with others, since as the name indicates, in addition

to the head, knee and chest, it is played fundamentally with the foot, the goalkeeper can only

play with the hands and exceptionally the field players to enter the ball into the field of play at

the throw-in.

A. Presents a variety of motor situations: Example: running, jumping, pushing,

hitting, etc. and even acrobatics can be present within the configuration of the complete

soccer player in terms of movement resources.

B. Competitive: The antagonism is constant. The result can determine victory, defeat

and even draws, responding effectively to channel a natural instinct in man.

C. Rules: Through the creation of the international Board since 1883, the 17 rules of

football with their respective modifications are considered, contributing to the concept of

sport from 1823 of its emergence in England.

D. Playful character: Its game is sustained from the emotional point of view by a

high degree of enjoyment or pleasure in its performance, it is a sport that essentially arouses

passion in its followers, a growing number throughout the world (Martínez, 2008).

What's more,

➢ Matches are played on a rectangular court using a ball.

➢ Only two teams can remain on the court and each of them has 11 players.

➢ The only player who can touch the ball with his hands is the goalkeeper.

➢ The main idea of the game is to be able to introduce the ball into the opponent's goal

to score a goal.

➢ At half time, players have 15 minutes to rest.

➢ Each half of the match lasts 45 minutes.

4. Outstanding characters of Soccer in Ecuador

The outstanding soccer players of Ecuador throughout its history

The legendary 'Magic Head' is considered one of the best South American footballers

in history. He stood out at Peñarol in Uruguay, where he won eight league titles, three

Libertadores Cups and two Intercontinental Cups. In addition, he is the top scorer in the

history of the Libertadores with 54 goals.

Alex Aguinaga

The Ecuadorian '10' led the Tricolor in their first World Cup qualification for Korea

Japan 2002. He is considered one of the best players in the history of the Mexican League,

after appearing in 543 games and scoring 93 goals with Necaxa. In that club he won three

league titles.

'Toño' is the best Ecuadorian player in European football. He played 10 seasons at

Manchester United, where he won nine titles, including two Leagues and one Europa League.

He is the only Ecuadorian who played in a Champions League final and became captain of the

'Red Devils', who included him in their team of the decade. He also played two World Cups

(2006 and 2014) with the National Team.

The 'Tin' is the top scorer for the Tricolor along with Enner Valencia with 31 goals

and was key in qualifying for the World Cups in Korea-Japan 2002 and Germany 2006. He is

recognized for his definition and the power of his header that they made him the top scorer for

the Tri in the qualifying phases with 16 goals.

Edison Méndez

The only Ecuadorian player with three World Cups, he is also recognized for opening

the door to European soccer for local soccer players. With PSV Eindhoven, the 'Kinito' won

two League titles and one Super Cup. Added to his record is a South American Cup (2009)

with Liga de Quito and he was pre-classified for the Ballon d'Or in 2006, after shining at the

World Cup in Germany.

The historic Quito League player accumulated more than 25 years of career as a

national football figure and was also part of the Tricolor. He is recognized as one of the most

technical footballers that Ecuadorian football has ever had.

'Pepe Pancho' is the best goalkeeper who has passed through the Ecuadorian National

Team. He was a starter in the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup and saved in the finals of the

1998 Copa Libertadores with Barcelona and in the 2008 Copa Libertadores, where he was the

figure in the penalty shootout and gave the title to Liga de Quito.

The 'Pibe' is recognized as one of the best footballers in the history of Emelec, where

he was part of the historic 'Ballet Azul'. His skill with the ball, his technique and his ability to

finish gave him recognition in the 1960s, in which he even starred in a great shirt against

Barcelona SC.

Jaime Ivan Kaviedes

The 'Nine' was part of two World Cups with the National Team and scored the historic

goal against Uruguay with which the Tricolor qualified for its first World Cup. Despite

having a long career due to indiscipline and off-sports incidents, Kaviedes left some marks,

such as being the top scorer in the world in 1998 with 43 goals, a record that no one has

managed to beat in Ecuadorian football (Bendito,2019).

5. Times that Ecuador has qualified for the World Cup

The Ecuadorian squad is known nationally and internationally as La Tri or La

Tricolor. To date, it has managed to qualify for four editions of the Soccer World Cup (2002,

2006, 2014, 2022).

Soccer World Cup 2002.

It was held in South Korea and Japan, between May 31 and June 30, 2002. The

Ecuadorian team was one of the 32 participating countries in the 2002 Soccer World Cup,

held in South Korea and Japan. Ecuador reached the final phase of a Soccer World Cup for

the first time, obtaining 24th place and being eliminated in the group phase.

Ecuador qualified directly for the Soccer World Cup by obtaining second place in the

elimination group.

Soccer World Cup 2006

This edition of the event was held in Germany, between June 9 and July 9,

2006. Ecuador reached the final phase of a Soccer World Cup for the second time in the

tournament held in Germany in 2006. There they achieved a meritorious 12th place. Eager to

continue their success, Ecuador reached the World Cup by taking 3rd place in the South

American qualifiers.

The Ecuadorian team became one of the surprises of the tournament by going to the

second round as the second-best team in Group A after Germany, after defeating Poland and

Costa Rica. Their historic participation ended when they were defeated by England.

Ecuador qualified directly for the Soccer World Cup by obtaining third place in the

elimination group.

Soccer World Cup 2014.

It was held in Brazil between June 12 and July 13, 2014. Ecuador sealed its

classification on the last date of the qualifiers. Before the last date, Ecuador and Chile tied for

third place with 25 points. Finally, despite losing in Santiago against Chile by 2 - 1, Ecuador

finished in fourth place due to a better goal difference, qualifying directly for the World Cup.

Soccer World Cup 2022.

This edition will be held from November 21 to December 18, 2022 in Qatar. The

Ecuadorian soccer team was one of the ten national teams that participated in the Conmebol

qualification for the Soccer World Cup, which will take place in Qatar.

The preliminary stage – also called the knockout stage – was played in South America

from October 8, 2020 to March 29, 2022 in round-robin matches. Ecuador finished in fourth

position and thus qualified for the fourth time to a FIFA World Cup (Selección de fútbol de

Ecuador, 2022).

6. Review of the Ecuadorian Soccer Federation

The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF), better known by its acronym Ecuafútbol,

is the governing body for football in Ecuador. It began its actions on May 30, 1925 with the

"National Sports Federation of Ecuador", until its creation in 1967 as the "Ecuadorian

Football Association", and finally from 1978 it became its current name National Sports

Federation of Ecuador. It is affiliated with the International Federation of Association

Football (FIFA) and the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), the highest

soccer organizations in the world and in South America, respectively, and the Ecuadorian

Olympic Committee (COE), as the federation with Olympic sports (FIFA, s\f.)

It is the institution responsible for organizing and regulating the different national

teams, and the official men's and women's championships in all modalities, including the

futsal and youth branches, of sport in that country.
