Capstone Project Proposal Draft

Name of student: Michielle Constantino

Date: February 27, 2023
Teacher: Ms. Lara Lacroix
Capstone strand I have chosen is Project Capstone
Proposed title for my project: In Search of Her Soul

What is your inquiry question that interests you for further research? It should be a question that
connects with a purpose, passion or personalized area of interest for you. This is a question that
you cannot just google an answer for. Please see examples from your Capstone booklet.
My inquiry question is:

How does music pass on emotions to one person to another?

Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question. Explain WHY you are
choosing to investigate this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry connect
to your passion(s), purpose? Why is it of personal interest to you?

My inquiry question interests my passion of what music really does to each of us. I think it’s
great how a song could be something so powerful that the emotions from that song could be
passed onto the listeners. It’s so great how all of us gets connected through music. I’ve
always loved singing and music gives me different emotions, it makes me excited, hopeful,
sometimes anxious, and feeling down. I feel like music has a very big impact on our emotions
and it makes me really curious how does that happen.

Background: What background knowledge/connections/prior learning do you have in this

area of inquiry?

Personal experience speaking, i feel that more upbeat tunes and positive words evokes
positive emotions, while slower paced tempos evokes negative emotions such as sadness
and feeling of anxiety. The words behind each songs also has an impact on our emotions.
When people relate to what the lyrics say it triggers their memories and remember a specific
event that happened in their life wether it was good or bad.

Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What
connections does this inquiry question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals?

At this point of time I'm very interested with music producing. I would say that music has been
a big part of my life since I was a kid and knowing deeper about what music really does is
something that I would want to learn. For me music is an art, a medicine, a communication in

0
a much deeper sense.

Interdisciplinary and core competencies connections: What subject areas and core
competencies will be connected with your project? Outline and explain the connections.

Personal Awareness & Responsibility

Strengths:
1.) I can express my needs and seek help when needed.
When I do not understand some sentences or get confused with math problems I usually
come up and ask my teacher to explain it to me and if I still don’t get it, I ask for further
explanations.
2.) I am learning to take care of myself.
If I would live by myself right now, I would say that I'll be able to survive since I know how to
cook, clean the house, do my own laundry, and take public transportation going far places
alone.

Weakness:
3.) I understand learning takes patience and time.
There are times when I get frustrated when I play some chords on the guitar and I can’t do it
perfectly. But I know that it takes a lot of practice to learn something.

Social Responsibility
Strengths:
1.) I value diversity, defend human rights, advocate for others, and act ethically in all my
interactions, including online.
I respect people and always make them feel they belong in conversations by listening and
answering them. I stand up for human rights and believe that everyone has their rights and
responsibilities as an individual. I support protests about hate crimes and learn histories to
become knowledgeable about how it was really like in the past and pass it to other people as
well.

1
2.) I have positive peer and intergenerational relationships

There was a time I felt really down, and my family and friends tried to cheer me up by talking
to me about my problems or buying me some snacks and writing me letters about how
special I am to their lives.

Weakness:
3.) I am aware of my community and environment and work independently and
collaboratively for the benefit of others.
Sometimes I have a hard time working with other people when I feel like it’s hard to get into
their conversation and suggest ideas. Especially when working with a big group.

Critical Thinking
Strenghts:
1.) I can explore and create new ways to represent my learning around a variety of problems,
events, issues, and needs.
I challenge myself to go beyond what is expected and put a lot of effort into them. When I
had my engineering class last semester, we made a project and constructed a windmill behind
a house using popsicle sticks and some given materials. I did my absolute best to make it work
with lots of trials and errors and learning from mistakes.

2.) I understand the purpose of my work and consider my audience.

In my film class I’ve learned that it’s important to consider the purpose of the film you’re
going to be making and to make sure that even if it’s a short film, people who are watching
should be able to understand the concept of what you’re making.

Weakness:
3.) I can analyze and critique my work and my learning.
I had a project in my engineering class where we had to make a race car using the power from
the batteries. I thought my work was done because it worked but when my teacher checked
my work there’s still so much to improve and change.

2
Creative Thinking
Strengths:
1.) I can create new and unique ideas that may provide new perspectives that influence how
people think about topics.
I like sharing my thoughts about some topics especially when I had my genocide studies class
in grade 11. I tell people how some ideas made me feel and it opens to another thought that
we get to discuss as a class.

2.) I can use the environment around me, including others, and my unconscious mind to
generate new ideas.
For the past months I've been really having such deep thoughts about everything and life and
what I want to offer in the community as an individual. By connecting with nature and hearing
people’s different perspectives it helps me generate ideas and come up with things.

Weakness:
3.) I can persevere and understand that failure can be productive.
I often set a high standard within myself and sometimes I take failure as something bad.
There are times when I would just give up when I work on a project because all i see is just me
failing.

Communication
Strengths:
1.) I can listen, learn to contribute meaningfully to discussion and debate, consider different
perspectives, and build consensus.
When I work in a group project I listen to my groupmates carefully, and I also suggest ideas if I
got one. I also try to talk to each of them if they have anything to add because I know some
people are too shy to talk first.

2.) I can engage in deep and meaningful inquiry for a variety of purposes and audiences.
I look more into what the purpose of the ideas are and what could be issues that I may
encounter. I ask for people’s opinions and those who have had experience already.

3
Weakness:
3.) I can reflect on the process of learning and share what I have learned.
I would say that I am not a mentor type of person because I feel like I am not particularly
good at explaining things.

Personal and Cultural Identity

Strengths:
1.) I understand that culture is a broad concept that includes things like my geographic region,
nationality, sex/gender, age, ethnicity, sexuality, language, and religion.
I have always believed that every person is unique and whatever makes up a person makes
them beautiful. People should always be whoever they want and believe what they know
with respect for other people’s as well.

2.) I understand what is important to me.

I use my energy on things and with people that I could learn from and that would be useful
for me in the future. I do not want to drain my energy on things that I know don’t benefit me
and is bad for me.

Weakness:
3.) I know my strengths and what makes me unique.
I try to explore various aspects of life and look on things that I am good at and makes me
happy. My traits and characteristics makes me who I am, and I embrace who I am and what
my background is.

Capstone Presentation medium: select one or more project mediums you wish to use to
present your project. Outline and give details about how you will present your project once
completed. You may use a combination of mediums.
o Electronic portfolio: Prezi or PPT
o Physical portfolio
o Website
o imovie presentation

4
o YouTube channel

I plan to present my project as a video presentation. I’m planning to make a song lyric video
using pastel colors and a background picture of my doodle art to make it look interesting. I
think adding the lyrics would help the audience know the words I'm saying and it would help
them to remember which past stood out for them.

Description of my Capstone project. Specific Project Details of the Capstone Project: what
will you research, create, study, produce, solve, investigate? What product will be produced
at the end of this project for evaluation. Write a one-page description outlining your
proposal.

In Search of Her Soul

The idea of the project I have chosen is to create a song that would encourage all those who
are graduating that are feeling anxious about what is going to be next for them. The things
that I must learn first are chord progressions that would fit in for the sound I am going for. I
also need to learn how to blend mixes of sounds, and what types of sounds should be made
up of for the genre I am planning to make. There are a lot of articles online that explain what
type of chord progressions are best for which genres. I also try to listen to diverse types of
music and watch videos online what I would need to start creating my own song.
I am going to be drafting different poems and take parts that I would like to include in my
song. There are some tunes I have experimented with in the past and created some short
songs and I could practice with those until I get the vibe I am really going for. I also plan to ask
advice from people and hear their thoughts about it.
I must study how to combine different sounds and make the sound balance without one
overpowering one, and make the sound makes sense to the audience.
I would need to learn the basics of blending sounds of piano and the guitar.
I plan to create lyrics that would have an impact on the audience and use words that are not
overly complicated to comprehend but as unique as possible.
*Biggest struggles would be:
Arrangements of the tune and lyrics
Melody writing
*Solutions could be:
Play the base tune of the song and just overlay it with different sounds.
Do an acapella first/using natural sounds like tapping on the table or humming.
The product I expect to turn out would be something poetic and very encouraging. There are
some artists’ genres that I like to get inspiration from for my music, like upbeat indie pop. The

5
music that I have in my mind that I want to produce is something remarkable.

Resources/ Technology/Skills: Make an assessment of the resources, technology and

skills you will need to be able to complete this project. What is your plan to be able to
access/learn all of the resources necessary to achieve completion of this project? Detail
your plans.

For my project the things that I'm planning to use are guitar, piano, and some sounds that are
only produced digitally so I would have to download an app to adjust and blend in different
sounds. I would need to learn different type of chord progressions to determine what type of
vibe of music I would be going for. There’s a lot of youtube videos and blogs posted online
that I could access to learn different type of chord progressions. I would also need to learn
how to edit and combine all the sounds i would be producing and the volume of my voice to
make them balance and not one overpowering one.

Mentors/Community Connections: What types of mentor(s)/community connections will

you need to help you complete your capstone project? How will your mentor(s) help you?
What is your plan to access the mentorship/community connections necessary for this
project?

A mentor that would be able to help me is someone who is passionate and knowledgeable
about producing musics. It would be a very big help if they would be honest and suggest ideas
to make my song much better. I will take criticisms because I know it would be a big help to
make my projects turn out great. I plan to ask friends if they know how to produce music or
know anyone who knows how. I could also look online for people or companies that can help
me.

Project limitations: What are some project limitations and potential obstacles that you foresee
that might affect progress with your Capstone Project?

The limitations and potential obstacles I foresee about this project is I know that at some point
I would feel like it’s very hard and everything doesn’t make any sense so I might make
impulsive decision of changing everything and doing something new. I’m also not very
knowledgeable of editing sounds so that would be an obstacle.

6
Other considerations: List and detail any other related information/ considerations about
your project that you feel should be included in your project proposal.

Some things that I consider including in my proposal is that the purpose of this project is to
help and be an encouragement for those students who feel anxious about what’s going to be
next for them after graduating highschool. Talking about music affecting a person’s emotion, I
want to spread hope within everyone that’s why I plan to create this project aside from my
interest on music.
