INVESTIGATORY PROJECT:

WRITING A REVIEW OF RELATED

LITERATURE (RRL)

LEARNING TARGET:
• I can determine how to write a review of related literature.
What is a review of related literature?

According to Bloomsburg University (2022) A literature review is a comprehensive summary of

previous research on a [your] topic.

The literature review surveys scholarly articles, books, and other sources relevant to a particular
area of research.

A literature review creates a "landscape" for the reader, giving her or him a full understanding of
the developments in the field. This landscape informs the reader that the author has indeed
assimilated all (or the vast majority of) previous, significant works in the field into her or his
research.

Teacher’s note: This means each member of the group conduct research of the previous/related
researches/study of your chosen topic in investigatory project. One foreign study and one local (in
our country) study. Take note, the study must be within 2012 – 2022 only.
PROCESS in Writing Review of
Related Literature (RRL)
1. Formulating questions – ask questions about your independent and dependent variables to
easily identify the relevant previous studies/research in your chosen topic. Refer to the sample
below:

INDEPENDENT:
QUESTIONS:
WATER WITH SUGAR
• How should sugar be defined?
TOPIC: • How is sugar when mixed with water?
EFFECTIVENESS OF WATER • How sugar can be a caused in the growth
WITH SUGAR IN THE HEIGHT of the plant?
OF GUMAMELA PLANT

Teacher’s note:
The number of questions depends on
DEPENDENT: QUESTIONS:
your study. Just make sure each HEIGHT OF THE • What is gumamela plant?
member has at least one RRL for GUMAMELA PLANT • How do gumamela plants grow?
foreign and local studies.

2. COLLECTING– This step asks you to research the answers to the questions formulated in step
1. Presented below are the websites that you may use in conducting your research.

3. ANALYZING– From the results presented on your formulated questions, you

have to skim and scan all these results to identify the most related previous
research or studies.
To do this, you have to read the abstract of them. An abstract is a summary
of the (published or unpublished) research paper (University of Wisconsin-
Madison, 2022). From the abstract, you can decide whether to continue
reading or not the research/study. As well as, it’ll help you to discern whether
use it or not.

4. Arranging– In reading and gathering different previous

studies/research, it gives you a visualization of how should your
RRL be constructed in chronological order. You can create an
outline of your collected related studies/research to present it in
logical order.

4. Summarizing– This features on how collected studies are conducted and how it is relevant
to your chosen topic in investigatory project. You follow the table below in organizing your
RRL. Once you have accomplished the table below, you have to combine your summaries
to create several paragraphs. Use connecting words/phrase to show continuity or transition
of your summary.
When summarizing, you should include in-text citation to quote the author. See next slide to
see how in-text citation is done.

Date Published Author Local or Foreign Title of the Study Summary

INTEXT - CITATION

In-text citations are used each time

you quote, paraphrase or refer to a source in the body of
your paper. The in-text citation is the underlined words in
the text below.

Sample: According to Grotcher and Edwards (1990), when

participants used communication to reduce their fear of their illness,
they were likely to communicate about their illness more often.
