National Supercomputing Mission (NSM)

Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) and

South Asian Meteorological Association (SAMA)
Capacity Building/ Training School on WRF Modeling system
03 - 20 April 2023
About WRF Model:
The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model is a mesoscale numerical weather prediction system. It is a
state-of-the-art model, designed for both atmospheric research and operational forecasting applications. The model
is useful for a variety of meteorological applications at sizes ranging from tens of meters to tens of thousands of
kilometers.
About C-DAC :
Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) is the premier R&D organization of the Ministry of
Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) for carrying out R&D in IT, Electronics, and associated areas. C-DAC
has initiated many computational earth science projects employing the PARAM family of supercomputers to stay up
with forecasting advances and build self-reliance. C-DAC uses HPC for Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental
Sciences in research and technology by offering a comprehensive computing environment, modeling and simulation
services, and data analysis/processing tools.
The NSM Mission is to strengthen our nation's academic and R&D institutions by building a massive supercomputing
grid with more than seventy high-performance computing centers. NSM's purpose is to provide our scientists and
researchers with state-of-the-art supercomputing resources so they may conduct cutting-edge research in their
respective fields.
About SAMA:
South Asian Meteorological Association (SAMA) is a professional non-profit society for the promotion of
Meteorological and allied sciences and their application for the safety, well-being and sustainable development of
the citizens of the nine South Asian countries. Presently, SAMA has more than 400 members including life and
student members. SAMA has three corporate members; ICIMOD, Nepal, and RIMES, Bangkok, and NAM S&T
Center, New Delhi. During its journey in the last 2.5 years, SAMA has conducted many webinars, training workshops
and lecture series.

About Training:
The purpose of the training school is to: a) provide basic knowledge on WRF b) train individuals in WRF system
porting and operation; and c) train personnel in customizing the WRF model to fit individual needs. The 3-week
training (lectures and practice sessions) would cover: i) System set up ii) Basics of Linux and High Performance
Computing, parallel programming iii) WRF and associated libraries installation (iv) WRF running on HPC system, and
(v) post-processing and visualization.
This would be beneficial to Masters/ PhD students, professionals in Atmospheric Sciences and allied subjects.
