Notes:
The service manual is designed to support Level 1 of a two-level service strategy. Level 1 (on-site)
field service employs modular replacement of printed circuit boards and other assemblies that are
most effectively repaired at a central repair facility. This is the service strategy used in field service,
and presented in Carl Zeiss Meditec (CZM) training classes.
Level 2 (workshop repair) include procedures which are not possible on-side or where on-side repair
was not successful.
See Section 1.3 for additional information regarding the IOLMaster service strategy.
The procedures in this manual assume that the reader is familiar with operation of the instrument.
Complete operating instructions are contained in the IOLMaster User Manual. Information presented
in the user manual is not repeated in this service manual. The user manual can be ordered separately
by standard Zeiss parts order.
Update revisions to this service manual will be issued by Service Bulletin, as required.
The general layout of the service manual is shown below. For greater detail, please refer to the Table

• Check that all notes and labels are complete and correctly positioned using the user manual.
− The measuring results must be documented in the technical safety check report (See SB 400)
Procedure:
1. Measuring protective ground resistance
• A maximum test voltage of 24V and a test current of 10A AC are recommended for
measurement.
• Connect the device with its connecting cable to the power socket of the safety tester
(e.g. RIGEL 288).
• Firmly press the test probe against a screw head on the housing of the IOLMaster (see
Figure 2 – 1)
• Start the measurement and note down the measured value.
• If the IOLMaster is powered via the power socket of the IT table, repeat the measurement for
the table. The same applies if the system is operated via a multiple socket. Include the
multiple socket into the measurement in this case.
• Note down the highest value measured.
• The limit value that must not be exceeded is 0.3 Ohms for devices with a power cord and
0.5 Ohms for systems with a multiple socket.
For all measurements and tests during the electrical safety check please use the two points according
to Figure 2 – 1 and Figure 2 – 2.

Part No. 1775-780 3-8 Section 3, Revision A, Dec. 2009
IOLMaster Parts Removal / Replacement
Spare part: 1757-148 ACD slit module (identical for left and right slit module)
Removal:
1) Remove both head covers – see 3.1.1
Note:
Observe ESD protection measures when working on electronic
components.
Reassembly:
Reassemble in reverse order observing the following instructions.
1) Loosely screw new slit module on.
2) Reconnect cable to Digital IOL PCB.
3) Align the slit-module – see 4.2.13
4) Check and if necessary calibrate ACD – see 4.4.2
5) Perform a System Checkout in accordance with the instrument checklist.
Note:
The (redesigned) alignment device for IOLMaster is absolutely vital for replacing the CCD
camera. Without this tool it is impossible to verify the required focus level of the camera.
This may lead to incorrect measurement, especially with regard to ACD measurements.
Alignment issues between the overview and Keratometry positions may also present
themselves. The exchange of the CCD camera without using the (redesigned) alignment
device is not permitted. Old alignment devices (bought before July 2008) can be retrofitted.
Please send the related tools to our Jena (Germany) repair center.
Note:
Before determining whether a camera is “worn out”, several preconditions must be checked
and / or set on an IOLMaster to ensure that the camera parameters are properly adjusted.
1) Preconditions:
Proper connections
Frame grabber settings (see 4.1.3)
Clean optics (see 4.2.1)
Camera sensitivity voltage settings (see 4.2.6)
Surrounding field illumination settings
(see 4.2.7)
Aperture alignment (see 4.2.12)
Note:
The following points are vital to be checked as Fig. 3 – 9: Worn out camera
“YES” to ensure a successful camera
replacement.
Note:
Heating up a CCD camera which does not show any image can easily re-activate it. Use a
heat gun for this purpose. Be extremely carefully while blowing hot air into the instrument.
There is a high risk of damaging other components.
3) CCD camera is still in the original position (compare crosshair position between Overview and
Keratometer mode with the test-eye) and measurements (ALM) show good results in relation to
the SNR value?
Note:
If the CCD camera is no longer in its original position and / or the SNR of the ALM
measurements is not within specification, the replacement of the camera must be aborted,
and the measurement head must be sent in for repair in house.
Removal:
Note:
The following procedure describes only the replacement of the CCD camera. The positioning
will only be as good as the old / worn-out camera was. It is not possible to re-align the
camera if once the original position has been lost or if the present camera is misaligned. This
requires either a head-replacement or in-house repair.
1) Remove both head covers – see 3.1.1
2) Remove the test-eye from the chin rest, if present. 1
3) Attach the alignment tool to the Keratometer. Position the tool
30° tilted from the axis and center the ring to the hole of the
Keratometer. Rotate the tool until the hooks are behind the
Keratometer frame and tighten the screws carefully. Check that
the tool is immovable.
4) If not already done, switch on the IOLMaster, create a test
patient and change to the Keratometer mode. The sphere side 2
of the rotatable head must be in the direction to the instrument.
5) Focus the spots (using the Z-drive screw of the tool) and align
the X and Y axis in relation to the crosshair. Loosen the knurled-
head screw to position the sphere. Tighten the screw when
done.
Note:
The image in Keratometer mode must be exactly
centered as shown below before proceeding further. Fig. 3 – 10: Aligning the tool
Note:
Observe ESD protection measures when
working on electronic components.
7) Shut down the instrument and disconnect
the camera cable from Digital IOL PCB
(X219)
8) Remove the four screws (2 mm hex key) and
replace the CCD camera Fig. 3 – 11: Tool positioning
9) Loosely secure it with the four screws (2 mm hex key) and plug-in the camera cable (X219)
10) Adjust the camera sensitivity voltage as necessary (2.9 ± 0.3V at R75, next to X219) and align the
camera to the tool (in Keratometer mode). Remember that the image on the screen must be
exactly centered. Be as accurate as possible while aligning the camera.
11) Check overview and Keratometer position by moving the magnification changer manually in PIO-
Test (motor-tab). If the CCD camera was well positioned, both crosshairs should match with the
sphere (no horizontal / vertical gap).
1) Rotate the tool-head 180° (“black-finished” back-side must face to the instrument).
2) Change to Keratometer mode and run PIO-Test (service-mode). Go to “Chanel 3” of the PIO-Ports
tab and switch on the slit groups alternately.
3) By turning the Z-axis screw of the tool, the background of the tool-head can be focused. If
the focus level of the CCD camera matches to the optical alignment of the instruments, both
slits are projected to the middle of the crosshair and do not “virtually” move while switching
on the left and right hand side of the slit groups alternately. As a tolerance range, the inner
circle of the crosshair can bee seen. While focused, the slit projections must lie within this
(inner) circle.
4) If there is a focus shift present, the slits are not projected as described in Fig 3 - 12 - they are out
of the middle position while the background is focused – see Fig. 3 - 13
5) See the Fig. 3 - 14 and 3 - 15 to determine if the focus level of the CCD camera is too far in the
front or too far in the back.
6) If the left slit is projected too far left and the right slit projected too far right, the focus level of
the CCD chip is too far back – add shims between the white camera bases and the metal plate.
7) If the left slit is projected too far right and the right slit projected too far left, the focus level of
the CCD chip is too far in the front – add shims between the casting and the metal plate of the
camera.
Fig. 3 – 15: Focus shift – CCD chip too far in the front
Note:
Adding shims will require you to take the camera out again. Follow the related sections
of the replacement procedure. Afterwards continue to determine the focus shift again.
Note:
Always add equal numbers of shims to all four fixation points – either one shim (0.2 mm)
or two shims (0.4 mm) at each point.
8) Continue as long as the focus shift meets the tolerance range (While the background is focused,
the slit projections must lie within the inner circle of the crosshair).
Reassembly:
Reassemble in reverse order observing the following instructions.
1) Reassemble the instrument in reverse order. Secure the LCD cable loop safely using zip ties.
Ensure free movement for the changer. Remove the tool and reattach the head covers. Quit PIO-
test and service mode
2) Take measurements with the test-eye and verify the calibration. Re-calibrate KER and ACD if
needed.-see 4.4.3 and 4.4.2
3) Compare SNR values (ALM measurements) of “before” and “after” the camera replacement,
values should be equal.
4) Perform a System Checkout in accordance with the instrument checklist.
Removal:
1) Enter Service mode, System tab, Read/Write EEPROM
and write a new ini file as a backup of the calibration
data – see 4.1.8

Fig. 4 – 2: Settings
Note:
Usage of the calibration password is only recommended for the purpose of calibration.
Exiting the calibration mode by clicking “OK” will cause the EEPROM to be re-written.
Because of the delays which the rewriting causes, the rewriting of the EEPROM should be
minimized to extend its lifetime.
“Save” section
The “Grab Images” checkbox can be
activated to highlight the checkboxes next
to it. These checkboxes can be individual
activated to save the images during the
measurement (KER, ACD or WTW). The
related images will be saved in the
IOLMaster folder and may be used later
for detailed troubleshooting
Fig. 4 – 7: Prog Tab
Note:
After the images have been made, the feature must be deactivated manually again.
Otherwise, the speed of the measurements will slow down and the HDD will be overloaded
with images.
“Output” section
Activating the “Detailed Output” checkbox will show the detailed measurement of the KER. Instead
of an average measurement, the five individual results will be displayed.
“Manual R/L Switch” allows switching via touchpad between the left and right eye side, without
moving the instruments head. The magnetic sensor which normally detects the right and left side is
temporary disabled. To switch between both sides, just click in the related column (OD or OS).
“Save and show Raw Signal” is only used at the factory. It shows the raw signal in ALM mode.
“Database” section
With both of these checkboxes checked, older patient files will be deleted from the HDD after the
time specified in “Program Settings” menu has elapsed. Unchecking these boxes should not be done,
as this would allow the HDD to fill up.
Note:
The changer steps will also be written
into the *.ini-file.
Fig. 4 – 11: EEPROM
“Write to EEPROM”
This option re-writes the EEPROM with the data currently displayed in the sections of the EEPROM-
screen (see Fig. 4 - 11). The instrument must be restarted after the EEPROM has been rewritten.
It is highly recommended to compare the data of the ini-file and the EEPROM afterwards to verify the
success of the writing procedure. Open the related ini-file via “Notepad” and compare the sections
with those of the EEPROM screen. If they are not the same, repeat the procedure.
4.1.9 PIO-Test
The PIO Test contains three tabs which can be used for field-service. The “Inbetriebnahmetest” tab is
only for the manufacturing.

Note:
The instrument must be switched off for cleaning – do not switch the instrument on before
the cleaning mixture has been dried off. Use Carl Zeiss cleaning mixture “L” for cleaning only.
This cleaning agent is approved. Be carefully while cleaning components near painted
surfaces. Use small quantities at one time – do not “flood” the instrument. Keep the cleaning
mixture clean (do not dip the dirty wiper into the mixture bottle).
Note:
It is recommended to perform inside the head cleaning with compressed-air, as the inside
components normally are only contaminated with dust (no grease contaminants). If using
canned compressed air, do not allow liquid propellant to strike optical surfaces, as
spotting may result on the surfaces. If liquid cleaning is necessary (e.g. fingerprints),
proceed as showed in the following sections.

Note:
Please align only one slit group at
same time, otherwise the second
group as a reference get lost.
7) Now align the related slit group in a way,
that the projected slit becomes as thin as
possible. The position of the slit must be
in the middle of the crosshair. The inner
circle can be seen as the tolerance range
for the adjustment.
8) Double check both slit groups. The
projected slit images should virtually
“stay” in the same position while
switching between both slit groups. If
necessary also adjust the other slit group,
too. Fig. 4 – 46: Slit group adjustment
Note:
If one or both slit groups have been adjusted, a re-calibration of the ACD might be
necessary. – see 4.4.2
Note:
There are three possible alignments of the magnification changer – the sensor, the flag and
the changer steps (software setting). The alignments, if necessary, should be done in order.

way, that both, the bright laser spot (primary reflection) and the secondary reflection
(see Fig. 4 – 48) are over each other and fix the position of the measurement head.
Note:
If this position is not roughly aligned with the crosshair, this can be taken as prove that
the sensor of the magnification changer must be aligned.
6) Switch between measurement-position and overview-position back and forward. At the moment
check only the measurement position. If the position where both laser reflexes lie over each other
don’t match with the crosshair position, the sensor must be re-aligned.
7) Loosen the sensor (two screws) and change the position slightly. Depending if the crosshair stays
left or right from the laser spot, the sensor must be aligned to the left or right hand side.
Note:
Whatever will be done at the sensor, do not move the position of the measurement
head. It is of vital importance the measurement head keeps positioned as the laser
reflections stay over each other.
8) Switch again between measurement-position and overview-position back and forward to see the
effect of the alignment. Repeat the procedure as long as the crosshair will stay over the laser spot
in measuring mode (not overview-mode!).
Note:
You are now in KER mode and should see the spots and the crosshair perfectly aligned.
If not, manually move the changer once again (click the checkbox next to “Changer”) to
overview- and back to measurement position. If necessary also re-position the head.
10) Click “Step +” several times (at least 8 times). The motor will move the optics (image) now to the
left hand side (out of the crosshair).
11) Click “Step –“ until the “End” position switches from 1 to 0 (indicates that the sensor has
detected the flag). Continue pressing “Step –“until the “phase” shows 00 and count the number
of motor-steps in between of the switch of the end-position and the 00 (The switch itself from 1
to 0 does not count).
12) The accepted range for this “switch-gap” is 2 or 3 steps. Any other number requires a fine
adjustment of the sensor position. Loosen the sensor again and slightly move it. Be carefully, the
necessary alignment requires a minor positioning only.
Note:
The fine adjustment may take some time and some attempts. Be accurate with this
alignment, because it will ensure the stable positioning of the measurement lens.
Remember: All measurements taken by the instrument are related to this positioning!
13) Use the manual control of the changer (PIO-Test / Motor tab) to switch between the
measurement-position and overview-position and back to see the effect of the sensor-alignment.
Always check the alignment according the laser spots before checking the fine-alignment
according the steps (switch-gap).
14) If the sensor is successfully aligned, finally tighten the screws. The sensor doesn’t need to be
aligned for the overview position of the magnification changer.
Flag
Note:
The Flag alignment will only change the overview-position. The measurement position will
not affected by this alignment.
Procedure:
1) Remove both head covers – see 3.1.1
2) Cover the optical path, to avoid any light interference.
3) Position the Test Eye (ALM Sphere) in front of the instrument.
4) Switch on the instrument, choose the “Check, Device” patient, select Dual mode and hit <K> key
until ALM mode is reached. Position the measurement head according the sphere. Run PIO-Test
(service-mode). – see 4.1
Change to the Motor-tab and slide the window to bottom of the screen, so that you are able to
see the KER spots as well as the control of the changer motor. See Fig. 4 - 49.
Note:
You are now in KER mode and should see the spots and the crosshair perfectly aligned.
If not, manually move the changer once again (click the checkbox next to changer) to
overview and back to measurement position. If necessary also re-position the
instruments head.
5) Manually move the changer now (click the checkbox next to “Changer”) to the overview-position.
Note:
Depending upon the step-information (setting in the “Steps” window), the position of
the crosshair according the image might be correct or not. Due to this “offset” will be
adjusted later, it’s not necessary to be correct for the flag-alignment. Anyhow, do not
move the position of the instruments head. It is of vital importance the instruments head
keeps positioned according the previously aligned measurement position.
6) Use “Step +“/ “Step –“to manual position the crosshair according the image.
7) If in this position the “End” position indicates 1, the flag must be roughly adjusted first. Loosen
the screws and move the flag to the left. If the “end position” indicates 0, skip to section 9.
8) Move the changer manually to the measurement-position and back to overview to see the effect
of the alignment. Use again “Step +“/ “Step –“to manual position the crosshair according the
image. If still the “end position” shows 1, the flag must be adjusted again.
9) Now click “Step –” several times (at least 8 times). The motor will move the optics (image) now to
the right hand side (out of the crosshair). The “end position” should switch from 0 to 1
somewhere in between.
10) Now, click “Step +“as long as the “end position” switches from 1 to 0 (indicates that the sensor
has detected the [adjustable] flag). Continue pressing “Step +“until the crosshair matches with
the image and count the number of motor-steps in between of the switch of the end-position
and the position when the crosshair matches (The switch itself from 1 to 0 does not count).
11) The accepted range for this “switch-gap” is 2 or 3 steps. Any other number requires a fine
adjustment of the flag position. Loosen the flag and slightly move it. Be carefully, the necessary
alignment requires a minor positioning only.
Note:
The fine adjustment may take some time and some attempts. Be accurate with this
alignment, because it will ensure the stable positioning of the overview lens.
Changer Steps
Note:
The changer steps will ensure a good overview-position only in combination with a well
aligned sensor and flag. It is vital to check (or if necessary align) the sensor and flag before
setting the changer steps.
Procedure:
1) Position the Test Eye (ALM Sphere) is in front of the instrument.
2) Switch on the instrument, choose the “Check, Device” patient, select Dual mode and hit <K> key
until ALM mode is reached. Position the measurement head according the sphere. Run PIO-Test
(service-mode). – see 4.1
Change to the Motor-tab and slide the window to bottom of the screen, so that you are able to
see the KER spots as well as the control of the changer motor. See Fig. 4 - 49
Note:
You are now in KER mode and should see the spots and the crosshair perfectly aligned. If
not, manually move the changer once again (click the checkbox next to changer) to
overview and back to measurement position. If necessary also re-position the instruments
head.
3) Manually move the changer now (click the checkbox next to “Changer”) to the overview-position.
Listen to the sound of the changer motor.
Note:
If the motor stops in between very shortly but continues straight away in direction (or
exactly) to the overview-position, the number of steps is too less. Most of the
instruments have their setting around the 295. It is recommended to set this as a default,
before continuing with the adjustment.
4) If, in overview, with this default the crosshair stands too far right of the image, the number of
steps must be increased. If it stands too far left of the image, the number of steps must be
decreased.
Note:
Setting (changing) of the changer steps is only possible in overview-mode. The Set button
won’t work in measurement mode.
4.3.1 Re-imaging
