The Relevance of Intra clergy Conflicts and the Cavite Mutiny

Prominent Filipinos were persecuted as a result of the Cavite Mutiny; the

secular priests Mariano Gómez, José Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora—then known as
GomBurZa—were accused of being the plot's instigators. The Spanish military
tribunal accused the priests of treason and sedition.

The three secular priests' unfair fate was well known at the time, not only
because of the false accusations brought against them but also because of how
promptly the Spanish court-martial reached its judgment. Even under political
pressure, the Archbishop of Manila refused to have them defrocked or remove their
rights to exercise the functions of the ordained ministry. He gave the command for all
churches to ring their bells at the time of the martyrs' execution to express his
recognition of their innocence. It played a significant role in the progression of the
events that led to the liberal Filipino agenda for reform in Spain.

The Filipinos experienced intense feelings of hatred and anger upon

Gomburza's passing. They questioned the government of Spain and demanded
reforms. It helped Filipinos to see that liberal ideas of equality, meritocracy, and
human dignity could no longer coexist with a colonial system. Independence was a
possibility that was just around the corner.

This awareness of the past causes nationalism to emerge, which eventually

causes the Philippine Revolution of 1896 to start. And this incident turned out to be
one of the most significant ones in the history of the nation, inspiring generations of
Filipinos to feel proud of their country. Filipinos from many origins came together
during a time of intense struggle and war to resist colonialism.
