Greek and Roman arts are considered classical arts. Greek art exhibited a high level of
intellectualism. It is clear that intellectual thought had been entrenched in Greece by the
protogeometric era. Vases with geometric patterns and symmetrical designs were decorated
throughout this time period as a way for artists to demonstrate their understanding of
mathematical concepts. Because they are recognized as the forerunners of contemporary
sculpture, architecture, and art, Greek and Roman arts are fundamental to history. Roman art,
however largely influenced by Greek art, served as the foundation for western civilization.
Western civilizations embraced the Romans' naturalistic style of painting and sculpture, depicting
whatever was in their immediate surroundings in their works. The design for modern architecture
was also developed by the Romans, who used concrete as their main building material. However,
the Greeks deserve all the credit for creating modern society's guiding principles.
