PROGRESS CHECK WEEK 7

From the various civilizations discussed in this lesson, choose three (3) which you think
have the most significant art contribution in the world. Justify your answer for each chosen
civilization. (10 points per civilization)

Greek Art
Throughout history, Ancient Greek Art has had significant influences that helped in
shaping the world of art before and even up to this day. It has introduced a lot of different
techniques and variations in perspectives that altered how artists perceived and produced art.
Their ways of art have influenced and ablaze the heart of many to make their art that one would
be highly proud of. But how did Ancient Greek Art managed to transform the world of art?
Ancient Greek Art is often given the credit for expressing art with realism. They were the
ones who have introduced art in such a way that it would represent features of reality in this
world in every detail of the work. One of the living claims of how Greek artisans made their
works look so realistic is their sculptures. In any other art, for example in statues of Egyptian
temples, their artworks are stiff, entirely rigid with faces that are blank, unrealistic symmetry, and
unproportioned bodies. On the other hand, Classical Greek sculpture has diverted itself to such
a way of expressing art. Instead, they turned their materials such as stone, bronze, and ivory
into something that could speak about life. They gave expressions to their artworks that portray
different feelings of pain, sorrow, happiness, hardships and the like that made it more engaging
to the viewers rather than keeping it static. This only suggests that Greeks do not create statues
but living things and they do not just create artworks but life.
Another aspect that Greek Art has greatly improved the art in the world is through its
architecture. They showed that elegance through mathematical proportionality together with
functionality can also be incorporated in different infrastructures. One of the examples of which
is their proposal of a mathematical ratio between the ideal height and width of a column that
could reach the highest standards of beauty in every structure. And this is something that
architects of today’s generation from different parts of the world are utilizing in their works. Not
only because they want aesthetics in their projects but by the reason that these arts and
architecture of Greek carry a weight of symbolism. Greek has a high sense of culture,
knowledge, and democracy and this is something that is represented in their architectures
particularly in their columns. And architects of this generation have used this aspect to represent
that they stand on the foundation of democracy just like in Democratic Athens.
Lastly, one of the most profound contributions of Classical Greek Art that we are still
enjoying today is theatre and literature. In Greek theatre, humanism takes the center stage. It
has sought to celebrate the values that the community upholds and as well as the achievements
that humanity has garnered. Their plays also seek to show the greatness of their culture as well
as the capacity, heroism, failings, and the life of humanity in general. Furthermore, Greek has
set a platform for the creation of literature to which it showcased the artistic minds of writers by
generating stories that humanity can relate.
These are just some of the many contributions of Ancient Greek Art that have greatly
altered our perception regarding the word “Art”. With their contribution way back then, we were
able to materialize things realistically that does not only represent a mere three-dimensional
figure but rather symbolizes something that is deemed significant to our society. And with that,
we were able to pass it on to different generations along with the values that we uphold and the
message that we wanted them to live on. Furthermore, up to this day and age, we are still
making use of Greek architecture and celebrating humanity’s life and hardships through
literature and theatre. That is why Greek art has been an influential factor in achieving the art
that we have today.

Roman Art
From the various civilizations discussed in this lesson, choose three (3) which you think
have the most significant art contribution to the world. Justify your answer for each chosen
civilization.
Romans were greatly influenced by the Greeks, there’s no question why most of the
buildings are somewhat similar to those of the latter. The Romans mainly were focused in the
field of architectural design; they were too good where most of our buildings today are using the
fundamental principles of building structures by Romans. One of their greatest contributions is
the use of arches. Though the ancient civilization wasn’t the first one to use arches, it was the
Greeks, but they were the ones who mastered the art. Also, Romans were one of the pioneers
of the use of concrete in their constructions.
The Roman Empire fell around 500 years ago yet their infrastructures are still standing,
leaving a prosperous story to tell. The secret behind the durability of the buildings is the massive
amount of cement and the lack of rebar.
Romans were also not to be reckoned with in terms of sculptures, wall paintings, and
mosaics. Moving away from their Etruscan and Greek roots, Romans found their identity by
creating optical effects and shade for greater realism. Paving the way for a more realistic
approach, the Romans were always in the quest for intricacy, effort, and attention to detail in
their artworks. This movement encouraged a more naturalistic output which in turn made the
artists and art lovers look for a more realistic and quality works.
Having an area of 5 million square kilometers spanning three continents (Asia Minor,
Northern Africa, and most of Europe), the Romans influenced a lot of people and its neighboring
towns. They made art accessible not only to the elite but also to the middle class; this boosted
the appreciation of art by the ordinary people. We can say that the Romans have one of the
most significant contributions as a lot of paintings of today features a great depth of field and
detail through the use of lights and shades. Churches, mansions, the White House features the
use of Roman architecture making it apparent that they have contributed something useful and
valuable in modern times.

Chinese Art
Form and function are a principle widely used in art. It can substantially be seen in
Chinese pottery. Their pots are not only functional but also boost their creativity through
patterns that consist of dots, zigzags, spirals, and lines. With the discovery of silk, the Chinese
began to represent the world around them. Early paintings were attributed to social and moral
functions. Subsequently, Chinese society has always put great emphasis on understanding the
pattern of nature and living under it, hence the ying-yang. Under its tutelage are vassal states
that included Burma, Vietnam, Nepal, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. Through these vassal states,
China brought its art that greatly influenced the surrounding regions. Chinese is also popular
through their trading business around the region this strengthened their influence and the ability
to impact other nation's art. Mass emigration of Chinese also greatly contributed to their
influence as they brought with them their art.
Chinese art is the paradigm of art in the Asian countries, a true epitome of artistry. Their
civilization may be antique but their influence can still be notably seen here in our country
through our fondness in tableware and home decor with floral designs. We can indisputably
conclude without a doubt that at some point they have greatly influenced little by little through
time and trading other nations.
