When a long vowel represents its long sound, it says its name as in ate eat ice old use.
We put a macron over a vowel to show that it is long: /ā/ /ē/ /ī/ /ō/ /ū/
Vowel Rule 2: If there are two vowel in a word or syllable, the first vowel is usually long and
the second is silent.
