Chapter 1: Overview FERRET v6.4 Installation and Release Notes

Chapter 1: Overview
For sites (Windows-based) workstations, these points provide an overview of the
installation process.
You can install FERRET for Windows software, v6.4 (FERRET) once on a single
workstation.
When FERRET is run, the software will propagate to the other workstations, at the site
including all stations with I/A Series software v8.x or Control Core Services software
(CCS) v9.x.
FERRET v6.4 no longer supports stations older than I/A 8.2.
We recommend that the station with the latest version of I/A Series software or
Control Core Services software available at the site be used as the install station
(Host station). This station is usually the CSA station. If you prefer not to use the CSA
station, you can install FERRET on a workstation with the closest version of I/A Series
software or Control Core Services software to that of the CSA.
For systems with legacy nodes (with I/A Series software v6.x or v7.x) connected using
an ATS in Extender mode (also referred to as a bridge node), you must use the legacy
version of FERRET (v6.3.1). Install the legacy version of FERRET on either the bridge
node or a workstation on the legacy Nodebus node. Otherwise, FERRET will be
unable to collect data from the legacy node. This is necessary if a second Ethernet
(entered using the second IP address on the FERRET Station Exclude screen) is not
available for at least one workstation on the legacy node.
Installation Procedures Include:
• Executing the software installation
• Validating the connectivity to Legacy Nodes
• Testing the installation
NOTE: FERRET v6.4 no longer supports Nodebus or UNIX collections. To collect
these legacy stations you must run a legacy version of FERRET.

FERRET v6.4 Installation and Release Notes Chapter 2: Enhancements

Chapter 2: Enhancements
New Station Manager Screen for Remote Collection
FERRET now uses a new Station Manager screen for all remote collections. This
screen allows you to remotely connect to other workstations at site, install FERRET,
perform a collection, and uninstall FERRET.
The Station screens and most run options are now handled by the new Station
Manager screen.

FERRET Now Collects Master Timekeeper Information

FERRET now collects this information:
• The HPSTK_MST om variable
• The tk.cfg file
• The ntp.confg and ntp.drift files
• The hpstk.log file
• The stations of the hpstk process
This information is used when creating the Master Timekeeper report.

FERRET Now Collects Device Monitor Information

FERRET now collects this information:
• The DEV_MONITOR process variable (from GLOF)
• The output of the dm_recon command
• The status of the cs_devmon process
This information is used when creating the Device Monitor report.

Chapter 3: Installation Prerequisites FERRET v6.4 Installation and Release Notes

Chapter 3: Installation Prerequisites

Install the FERRET software on a single workstation on a control network (the
Foxboro DCS Control Network). The software will propagate to the other workstations
when FERRET is run.
For systems with I/A Series software v8.x, or Control Core services v9.x, use the
FERRET installation CD (K0174MD-H).
Before performing the installation procedure, verify that you meet the following
prerequisites related to the various Foxboro DCS and I/A Series systems.
There are still some sites that are too large for FERRET to collect in a single
collection. For these sites, Schneider Electric recommends that you split the FERRET
run into multiple collections. Refer to Standard Data and Equipment Information, page
10 and Splitting a Station Collection, page 11 for recommendations on splitting a
FERRET collection into multiple runs.

Systems with Security Enhanced I/A Series Software v8.5 to v8.7

• If you receive the following message, then you must uninstall FERRET using the
Control Panel before you begin:
Unable to continue. There is a previous version of FERRET for
Windows installed which must be uninstalled before this version
can be installed.
• You must log in with an account in the “I/A Plant Maintenance” domain group.

Systems with Security Enhanced I/A Series Software v8.5 to v8.7

and v8.8 or Control Core Services v9.x
• If you receive the following message, then you must uninstall FERRET using the
Control Panel before you begin:
Unable to continue. There is a previous version of FERRET for
Windows installed which must be uninstalled before this version
can be installed.
• You must run FERRET from a v8.8 or greater workstation
• You must log in with an account in the “I/A Plant Admins” domain group
• To remotely collect the v8.5-v8.7 Security Enhanced stations, you must specify a
username and password for each of the older stations. Enter the credentials on
the “Station List” screen. The account should be a member of the “I/A Plant
Maintenance” group.

FERRET v6.4 Installation and Release Notes Chapter 3: Installation Prerequisites

Choosing the FERRET Host Station

Choosing the FERRET host station depends on the configuration of the site.

Standard I/A Series • The host station should be the Windows station with the latest version of
software v8.5 or Control Core Services software
earlier
I/A Series Security • Install FERRET on the Security Enhanced station with the latest version of
Enhanced stations I/A Series software
v8.5 to v8.7 only
• Log in to the station using an account in the “I/A Plant Maintenance”
domain group

Security Enhanced • FERRET must be run from a workstation with I/A Series v8.8 or Control
stations with both I/A Core Services software v9.x
Series software v8.5 • Log in to the station using an account in the “I/A Series Plant Admins”
to v8.8 and Control domain group
Core Services
software v9.x • To remotely collect v8.5-v8.7 Security Enhanced stations, you must enter
a username/password for those stations on the “Station List” screen. The
account entered must be part of the “I/A Plant Maintenance” domain
group.
NOTE: Remote collection of Windows XP stations from Windows 10/
Server 2016 stations is not supported.

Standard Data and Equipment Information

FERRET can be split into two separate collections by collecting Standard Data and
Equipment Info separately. These two collections should be run from the same
workstation where a normal FERRET run is done. Once the collections are complete
the two FERRET files can be merged using the System Asset Viewer tool.
NOTE: It is not recommended that you run two collections at the same time.
First Run - Standard Data Collection Run Type Selections:
• Standard Data
Optional Selections
◦ Data Topology
◦ Uninstall remotely
Second Run - Equipment Info Collection Run Type Selections:
• SysMgmt Data
• SNMP data from switches
Optional Selections
◦ Check Monitors
◦ Recheck missing stations/monitors

Splitting a Station Collection

NOTE: If possible, the first method for splitting a FERRET run is recommended.
The second method for splitting a collection is by station. This method involves
choosing a partial list of stations to be collected with each run using the Station List
screen. This method limits the amount of data collected at any one time. See the
following suggestions regarding how to split the collections:
• Splitting by System Monitor - This method splits the collection by System Monitor.
Select by Monitor from the View menu to see a list of stations that can be
collected.
NOTE: Off-platform stations do not appear in the Station List for either View by
Node or View by Monitor. For these stations you must enter them manually.
