Your Chosen Topic: The influence of folk music in Beethoven's Symphony No. 6
Rationale: In the space below, please explain (in less than 150 words) your choice of topic and
project type.
I have chosen to delve into the influence of folk music on Beethoven's composition style, specifically in
his iconic Symphony No. 6, also known as the "Pastoral Symphony." This symphony is renowned for its
incorporation of traditional folk melodies and rural themes.
What are the elements from music that we perceive as the distinct characteristic of a specific culture?
What is the factor that makes music sound different from other cultures? I believe that folklore
elements are the uniqueness of the respective culture and seed the characteristics of that music.
Through an in-depth examination of Beethoven's musical influences, I aim to gain a greater
understanding of program music and how those elements influenced on the transition of the classical
music to the romantic.
To accomplish this, I will analyze musical examples from Beethoven's Symphony No. 6, Haydn's "The
Clock" Symphony No.101 as well as other works of composers that used program music. By exploring
the impact of folk music on Beethoven's compositions, I hope to gain a deeper appreciation for his
creative genius and the role of tradition in shaping the classical music of the Romantic era.
Through this project, I aim to develop a greater understanding of how classical composers draw from
their cultural roots to produce the essence of that specific culture and make music different throughout
the world.
