Longshore drift & coastal TRANSPORTATION to view

video
Transportation is the movement of material in the sea
and along the coast by waves.

The movement of material along the coast is called longshore drift.

Draw a diagram to show the process of longshore drift.

Longshore drift happens when waves move towards the coast at an angle. Swash (waves
moving up the beach) carries material up the beach. Whereas backwash carries material
back down the beach at right angles, as a result of gravity. This process is repeated, in
relation to the prevailing wind direction, slowly moving material along the beach.

Longshore drift provides a link between erosion and deposition. Material in one place is
eroded, transported then deposited elsewhere.

Although longshore drift is the main process of transportation on coastlines, there are four
other ways material is moved along the coastline as well.

Draw an image to help you remember each transportation process.
