“ Virtual Orientation, Disturbance, Tolerance and Withdrawal; The Case Among Nursing Students’

Smartphone Utilization”

Abstract

The present study sought to determine the smartphone addiction proneness among nursing students of

the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences (CNAHS) of Jose Rizal Memorial State University (JRMSU),

Main Campus, Dapitan City. A descriptive-correlational research design was employed in the study.

Moreover, the study had a total of 248 respondents of nursing students from different year levels. In addition,

the researchers utilized an adopted standardized questionnaire by Kim D, Lee, Y., Nang, JN, Chung, Y. on

Development of Korean Smartphone Addiction Proneness Scale (SAPS) for Youth 2014 with a 15-items

questionnaire consist of four subdomains: disturbance of adaptive functions (5 items), virtual life orientation (2

items) withdrawal (4 items), tolerance (4 items). The data collected was tabulated and analysed using

descriptive and inferential statistics. Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions were

drawn: As to the profile, a majority of the nursing students are female-dominated within the age ranges from 20

to 22 years old and mostly Third-year level. It can be concluded further that the students are average prone to

smartphone addiction along with disturbance of adaptive function and withdrawal. Moreover, the student is not

much prone to smartphone addiction along with virtual life orientation and lastly, the student is prone to the

smartphone along with tolerance. Finally, in terms of the test of difference, the data did provide sufficient

evidence to conclude that the First-year nursing students have a significant difference in the level of smartphone

addiction proneness as compared to the Second-year level nursing students. The number of years, time, and

amount spent among nursing student respondents did show a significant difference in the level of smartphone

addiction proneness .
