Grade 4 Art Lesson Plan: Overlapping Shapes

Objective:

Students will learn about overlapping shapes and use this technique to create a visually interesting
composition.

Materials:

White paper (9x12 inches)

Pencils

Erasers

Colored pencils or markers

Procedure:

Introduction (5 minutes):

Begin by asking students what they know about overlapping shapes in art. Discuss how artists use
overlapping shapes to create depth and visual interest in their work. Show examples of art that use
overlapping shapes, such as paintings or drawings of buildings or landscapes.

Demonstration (10 minutes):

Demonstrate how to create overlapping shapes by drawing two shapes on the white paper with a pencil.
Then draw one shape on top of the other, making sure the edges overlap. Erase any lines that are not
needed.

Guided Practice (10 minutes):

Have students practice overlapping shapes by drawing their own shapes on a separate sheet of paper.
Encourage them to experiment with different shapes and sizes.

Independent Practice (15 minutes):

Instruct students to use the overlapping shapes technique to create a composition of their own. They
can draw anything they like, as long as they use at least three overlapping shapes.
Sharing (10 minutes):

Give students the opportunity to share their artwork with the class. Ask them to explain their
composition and how they used overlapping shapes to create depth and interest.

Reflection (5 minutes):

End the lesson by asking students to reflect on what they learned about overlapping shapes. Have them
share how they might use this technique in future artwork.

Assessment:

Assess student understanding by observing their artwork and listening to their explanations during the
sharing portion of the lesson. Provide feedback on their use of overlapping shapes and their overall
composition.
