SUBSTANCE ABUSE

● What causes addiction?
Once a chemical enters the brain, it can cause people to lose control of their actions or
crave a harmful substance. When someone develops an addiction, the brain craves
whatever the person is constantly taking. Constant exposure to an addictive substance
causes the prefrontal cortex (the area of the brain involved in planning and doing tasks)
to communicate in a way that makes something you like,suddenly becoming a need. As
in,without that particular substance/thing you would be unable to function. “The limbic
system is a set of structures in the brain that controls emotion, memories and arousal. It
contains regions that detect fear, control bodily functions”. The limbic system is a part of
that brain that controls reasoning.

● Binge drinking is when a person drinks a large amount of alcohol in a single


sitting.Prescription drug abuse is when you take a medication for a reason other
than why the doctor prescribed it. Many teenagers decide to use drugs because
they want to,fit in,to,feel good,to feel better,to do better,to expiremnt.

● SOCIAL: An addict could experience the loss of their friends. Addiction often
causes relationships to become difficult to keep, including those of friends and
family. The propel around you will not want to associate themselves with you
because of your image doing drugs. EMOTIONAL:Addiction pairs with negative
emotions like depression, anxiety, loneliness, and anger. When a person who is
struggling with addiction or alcoholism feels these negative emotions.
PHYSICAL: substance abuse can cause harm to organs and systems in your
body, such as your throat, stomach, lungs, liver, pancreas, heart, brain and
nervous system.

● 1.Say no firmly but clearly and without making a big deal about it. 2. Remember
to not feel obligated to do anything you don’t want to do 3. Suggest you do
something safer instead 4. Ask the person to stop offering things and to not do so
again.
