Media and Information literacy skills are necessary in the 21st century as
technology is getting more sophisticated. With the use of technology, people can
communicate and access information fast and easy. Through information technology,
people are exposed to a better and wider variety of multimedia. Apart from easier
access to information and faster exchange of communications, it also revolutionizes
people’s lifestyle. If new technology continues to develop, the media and
communication of the future will thrive.
This module will tackle how text, visual, audio, motion, manipulative, and
multimedia information are created and used.

What’s In
TEXT INFORMATION AND MEDIA

Classification of Text Information

In the previous topic, we discussed the different sources of text information.
Text information can be found in print media, such as books, newspapers, and
magazines. It has two general classification: fiction and nonfiction.
1. Fiction- it pertains to stories that are imagined or not true, such as fairy tales,
mythologies, and legends. Most works of fiction are regarded as forms of
literature.
2. Nonfiction- it is based on facts and reality. Biographies, news, and scientific
research are examples of nonfiction works. These are often found in textbooks,
encyclopedias, periodicals, and journals.

How Text Information is Produced

Text information is produced through the following steps:
1. The writer chooses a topic that he would like to write about.
2. The writer gathers information about the topic.
3. The writer makes an outline of the topic and writes the draft.
4. The writer reviews the draft and develops it into a full text.
5. The writer submits the article to the editor/publisher.
For articles written for a newspaper or magazine, the editor decides whether
the material is worthy of publication based on house style, theme, and quality of the
material. If the article meets approval, the article is published in the newspaper or
magazine.
For manuscripts written for possible publication as a textbook or a novel, the
publisher usually has a pool of reviewers who screens the quality of the manuscript in
terms of content and specific game. If the manuscript passes the screening/review, it
is endorsed to the editorial department. After going through the editorial process, the
manuscript is endorsed for printing.

MANIPULATIVE INFORMATION AND MEDIA

Types of Manipulative Information

To further understand how advertising or marketing firms apply manipulation,
we need to learn first how viewers, who are also consumers, perceive advertisements.
Based on consumer psychology, there are many factors that could influence a
consumer to patronize a product or service. Primarily, consumers buy a product
according to their needs. However, they also must take the price of these items into
consideration to ensure that they can afford it.
A consumer’s need and capacity to buy are factors that sellers and marketing
firms do not have control over. However, they can manipulate media platforms so that
the consumer will still buy the product even if it is a bit costly. Through media
manipulation, a consumer could be convinced to buy a product even if he does not
need it.
The following are examples of media manipulation.
• Consumer Confusion • Celebrity Endorsements
• Crowd Manipulation • Hoax
• Propaganda • Psychological Manipulation
• Gatekeeping • Fearmongering
