mutant microbes Tips and Instructions

I was looking for a way to allow my students to have a little fun while reviewing
the Chain of Infection. I came up with this activity and it became a bit hit (and
a great display).

The first worksheet is the instructions on what they need to create their
Super Bug. It walks then through the different links in the Chain of Infection. I
also have a lesson in my store on the Chain of Infection if you need something
for that as well.

After they have determined the parameters of their pathogen, they will use the
sheet on the next page to create an “Official Release” from the WHO. They just
need to simply fill in the info and then draw a picture of their pathogen (in the
“microscope” circle). If you want to give them a good resource for research,
the CDC has a page describing the chain of infection with various examples. It
is written (more or less) for the general public, so it isn't too hard to
understand. You can find the link here:

https://www.cdc.gov/csels/dsepd/ss1978/lesson1/section10.html

*Update: I have now included a fillable PDF for you to use as an option for
distance learning. I did have to remove the "microscopic view" but was able to
keep the other questions for students to complete electronically.

I hope you and your students enjoy this activity. If you have any questions or
problems, feel free to email me at purposefulpedagogymail@gmail.com
mutant microbes
Path gen pandemic
Name: ________________________________
The year is 2080. Bacteria has become resistant to most
anti-biotics. Viruses are mutating at high rates. Fungi are
spreading rapidly. Protozoa are getting larger and smarter.
Using your imagination, create a “superbug” that could potentially cause a world-wide
Pandemic. Below are the parameters you will need to follow on the worksheet provided.

Infectious Agent:
Choose what type of pathogen your mutant microbe will be. Bacteria? Virus? Protozoa? Fungi?

Reservoir:
What habitat will your microbe live, grow and multiply? Humans? Animals? Soil? Food? Water?
The air? Pick one or more of these to be the host of your germ.

Portal of Exit:
What path will your microbe take to leave its host? Bodily fluids? Blood? Aerosol? Feces?

Mode of Transmission:
How will your germ spread? Direct (direct contact and droplet spread) or Indirect (airborne,
vehicle borne, or vector borne)?

Portal of Entry:
How will your microbe enter its new host? Through the respiratory tract? Open Wounds?
Mouth? Nose? Eyes? Skin? Blood? Or all of these?

Host:
Who is more likely to be affected? What are the symptoms? How long is a person contagious?
What is the fatality rate? What is being done to stop the pandemic?

Be Creative! Have Fun!
