Literature - Short story w/ a plot twist

For the majority of my life, I have deeply enjoyed literature. More specifically,
storytelling and writing. It is an art form that allows me to express myself; any emotions, my
experiences, a lesson to be learned, and more. Stories are also one of the ways I bond with
others. So, after being assigned the short story project, I was quite excited. For this assignment,
students chose a partner to write a short story, which had to include a plot twist ending. It was an
open topic writing, which added to the excitement for this piece. In doing and completing this
assignment, students were meant to learn how to write a story with detail, interest, and creativity.

From this assignment, I learned a few things. First off, how to co-write a story. Normally,
my writings are done solely by me. Having a partner to brainstorm ideas with was different, but
very helpful. I was able to learn other ways of planning settings and characters through my
partner’s ideas. Overall, this helped make our final work better. Another learning was improving
my skills in creating a written piece that was both creative and would captivate the listeners.
Most of my growth from this assignment came from the partner aspect; learning how to stay
organized with two writers, communication, and patience.

Whilst our writing was highly detailed and interesting, there are a few things that I would
improve upon. Firstly, and most notably, is the plot twist ending itself. The story followed the
path of two characters, who were assigned to assassinate each other for their kingdoms. In order
to make a plot twist ending that fit, my partner and I decided they’d fall in love, then kill each
other anyways. Although this was somewhat interesting, I feel that another twist could’ve been
done instead. If I were to do this assignment again, I would keep the fairytale and royal elements.
This is majorly due to my interest in those kinds of novels, and the freedom that comes with
them.

The SLE that I connect this assignment to is Knowledge. By completing this assignment,
I achieved all parts of the SLE Knowledge. Through working on this writing piece, I did a large
amount of communication. My partner and I shared ideas, spoke about who would work on what
parts, and more. There was also an abundance of creative thinking, as our piece was creative
fiction writing. Lastly, I took ownership of my learning. I made sure to work on the assignment
regularly, and to fix my own mistakes.
