    Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use sunlight, carbon dioxide and water to produce glucose and oxygen. It occurs in plant chloroplasts and involves two main reactions. Chlorophyll absorbs sunlight which is used to break down water molecules, releasing hydrogen. Carbon dioxide and hydrogen are then used to produce glucose through a series of chemical reactions. Oxygen is released as a byproduct. Photosynthesis is important as it provides a food source for plants and releases oxygen into the atmosphere for other organisms to breathe.
