What is Photosynthesis?

Photosynthesis is the process used by plants

to create their own food. Plants use sunlight, Sunlight

water, and carbon dioxide to create food

(glucose) and oxygen. Carbon Dioxide

Photosynthesis
• Plants are special as they make
their own food tt

• They this by Photosynthesis

• Plants take in Carbon Dioxide and
Water [ reactant ]
• To make glucose and oxygen
Information by Krysler
The Importance of Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is important to living organisms

because it is the number one source of oxygen in
the atmosphere. Without photosynthesis, the
carbon cycle could not occur and oxygen-
requiring life would not survive.

Information by Ricka
Organisms that can Photosynthesis

Plants, algae and a group of

bacteria called cyanobacteria are
the only organisms capable of
performing photosynthesis

Things needed in photosynthesis

• Carbon dioxide
• Water
• Light energy/sun
• Chlorophyll
• Glucose
• Oxygen

Process of Photosynthesis
Chlorphyll absorbs green wave
lenghths from the sun, making plants
look green

Oxygen and water vapor exit the leaf

through the stomata. Water loss from
leaves is called transpiration.
Carbon Dioxide CO2 enters through
the stomata, an opening in the leaf’s
epidermis and cuticle

Water, CO2, and sunlight

combine in the leaf to make
sugar

Water is absorbed through the roots

& carried through the stem to the rest Excess sugar is stored as starch (food
of the plant in the roots

Factors that influence Photosynthesis

The main factors affecting rate of photosynthesis

are light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration
and temperature

Information by Ricka
Sunlight

Plants use sunlight to

capture energy. Plant
leaves contain a pigment
called chlorophyll which
absorbs sunlight.

Glucose Production
CH2OH
O
The photosynthesis reaction
produces glucose which provides
tt

energy for the plant. Excess

OH OH
glucose can be stored in the form
OH OH
of starch for later use.

Oxygen Release

Oxygen is released as a byproduct of

the photosynthesis process. It is tt

released into the air through the

stomata. This oxygen is essential for
supporting the respiration of animals
and other organisms.
