What is Shram Card Yojana?

The Shram Card Yojana is an initiative launched by the Indian government to provide
benefits and assistance to unorganized sector workers. It aims to address the issues of
financial insecurity and social exclusion faced by workers in the unorganized sector by
providing them with a unique identification card.

Step 1: Eligibility

To be eligible for the Shram Card Yojana, a worker must be employed in the unorganized
sector. The unorganized sector includes those workers who are not covered under any
formal social security scheme, such as farmers, daily wage laborers, street vendors, and
construction workers.

Step 2: Application

To apply for the Shram Card Yojana, the worker must submit an application form to the
nearest Shram Suvidha Kendra. The application form requires the worker to provide details
such as their name, address, occupation, and a photograph.

Step 3: Verification

Once the application is submitted, the concerned authorities will verify the details provided
by the worker. This process may involve a physical verification of the worker's identity and
occupation. The verification process is crucial to prevent fraudulent applications and ensure
that only eligible workers receive the benefits.

Step 4: Issuance of Shram Card

If the application is approved, the worker will be issued a Shram Card. The Shram Card is a
unique identification card that contains details such as the worker's name, photograph, and
occupation. The card also contains a unique identification number that can be used to
access various benefits and schemes under the Shram Card Yojana.

Step 5: Benefits

The Shram Card Yojana provides various benefits and assistance to workers in the
unorganized sector. These benefits include:

Financial assistance: The government provides financial assistance to workers in the

unorganized sector through various schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi
Maandhan Yojana and the Atal Pension Yojana.

Health and life insurance: Workers in the unorganized sector are often at risk of accidents
and illnesses. The Shram Card Yojana provides health and life insurance coverage to
workers to help them deal with these risks.
Skill development: The Shram Card Yojana provides skill development training to workers
in the unorganized sector to help them acquire new skills and improve their employability.

Housing: The Shram Card Yojana also provides assistance to workers in the unorganized
sector to build or purchase their own houses.

Step 6: Renewal

The Shram Card is valid for a period of three years. After the expiry of the card, the worker
must renew it by submitting a renewal application. The renewal process is similar to the
application process and requires the worker to provide updated details and a recent
photograph.

Conclusion

The Shram Card Yojana is a significant initiative that aims to provide social security and
financial assistance to workers in the unorganized sector. By providing a unique identification
card and various benefits, the Shram Card Yojana helps to improve the lives of millions of
workers in India.
