Context: Students will come into this lesson already knowing the president of the United States
and the president’s duty when in office. This new lesson will address the three branches of
government and their duties as well. This is important for students to understand how the United
States operates and the government. Learning the three branches of government will prepare
them for the next lesson of learning about the House of Representatives, Supreme Court, and the
Senate. This will follow learning the three branches of government because each make, carries,
and evaluates laws. By the end of this lesson, students will know the importance of the three
branches of government and understand why certain laws are set in place.
Data: Students will be grouped based on where their desk is placed. Groups will be created at
random because students will be able to equally interact with their peers. This will ensure that
every student is included. Students will be split into groups of five and push their desks together
for a small group activity. Then students will remain in their groups to collaborate in a group
quiz in Kahoot. Finally, students will take a graded quiz in google classroom.
Materials: Students will need a tablet, laptop, and pencil.
Detailed paragraphs from here on down.
Procedures:
Introduction (-- 15 minutes): Students will be introduced to the idea of branches of
government. Students will be prompted to open their textbooks. We will read through in a group
reading from their desks. Students will be assigned a page to read based off volunteers or from
teacher choice. After reading and obtaining definitions from the class text, students will be asked
questions that were based on the reading. Then we will move into a PowerPoint presentation that
talks about the three branches of government.

Teacher Directed (-20 minutes): Presentation will be composed of five slides that
continue to introduce the idea of three branches of government. Students will then be told what is
expected of them once broken up into small groups. Students will then be split up into groups by
desk. Once students are split up into groups, they will watch this video:
https://youtu.be/OvwlRTYvU8o and answer questions that will be provided on a paper. Students
will need an iPad to watch the video and a pencil to answer questions from the video. I will then
go around and collect each group’s paper for a participation grade.

Collaborative (-- 15 minutes): Students will remain in their original groups from the
video assignment. They will then decide on a team captain for each group. Then each captain
will decide on a team name with their group and login to Kahoot. There will be a quiz game in
Kahoot, and each team captain will collaborate with their groups for the answers based on the
three branches of government.

Independent Digital (--5 minutes): Students will login into google classroom and split
their desks back individually. This is an independent quiz on the three branches of government.
This quiz will be graded. This will show that each student learned something from their small
group and collaborative activities.

Closure (-- 5 minutes): The closure will wrap up the three branches of government once
the quizzes are completed. Then students will be told what we will move into next lesson and a
review of this lesson will be made. Students' homework will be to read the next chapter and
complete a five-question homework assignment to review in the next history block.
Rationale: You must have at least two paragraphs (one for each mandatory piece of
multimedia)
(Multimedia 1= App or website):
Kahoot is a great way for students to actively engage with one another. It is a fun way to
incorporate such learning because it introduces competition. This will make it more fun
for the students. Having a team captain assigns roles. Ending the lesson with an
individual quiz in google classroom ensures that every student can access digital data
and grasp the concept of the three government branches.
(Multimedia 2=
This video is a great tool for WebQuests. WebQuests are a great way to incorporate
small group activities and promote collaboration (Dr. Serhat Kurt, 2021). The video is a
different way to have students learn something new. Accessing this video and having a paper copy is a
great way to incorporate differential learning. WebQuest based assignments help students conduct
research. This will ensure students watch the video all the way through. This also introduces skills
such as reading comprehension. Students have each other to rely on for help which will get them
ready for handling individual reading comprehension assignments. This also promotes socialization
which could have beneficial effects on brain function and development.
