“What can they do when they come to
Kindergarten?” Just about all of them can talk!

For many children, they are natural storytellers.


For others, this isn’t the case.

Telling stories is important! Children learn that


they have something to say and that there are
people who want to listen to them!

Writing tools may be new to some of them.


Introducing the
Writing Process
To Kindergarten
Talking
“What can they do when they come to school?”

Telling stories doesn’t require them to know how to write their letters or
know how to draw.

Children get to know each other through their storytelling.

Children learn that they are thinking as they talk.

Children learn about the writer’s craft before ever


putting pencil to paper.

EL students can tell their stories however they feel comfortable talking
(in their native language, native+English, all English)
Drawing
Drawing Booklets: blank pages, spiral bound (purchased as a
notebook or create my own notebooks)

Model how to draw and model the thought process

Clearly set expectations beforehand

Conferences before they begin drawing

Review what they have done, to figure out where they are going next

Would occur after a couple weeks of talking


Writing
Sounding out words

Modeling from the teacher

Labeling parts of their drawings

Writing phrases and a sentence,


and then moving on to sentences

This book is perfect for Narrative Writing!

Ralph has no idea what to write about. All of


his classmates around him have started their
writing pieces. Ralph can only write his name
on his piece of paper.

Until he remembers an experience he had at


the park. That’s as far as he got before it was
time to share his story with the class. His
classmates began asking him questions about
his time at the park, and a story began to take
form. Ralph realizes that a story can be about
something little. Stories really are everywhere,
just like his teacher told him.

order to prepare the students for their final
writing product of the unit.
