Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 9 Self-Learning Module on Solving

Problems Involving Angle of Elevation!

This Self-Learning module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners in guided and

independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims
to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this self-
learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the self-learning module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 9 Self-Learning Module on Solving

Problems Involving Angle of Elevation!

This self-learning module was designed to provide you with fun and
meaningful opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and
time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being
an active learner.

RECAP
Direction: Determine whether the following statements represent an Angle of
Elevation or Angle of Depression.
____________ 1. Two points on the same side of a tree are 19.8 m apart. Their angles
to the top of the tree are 21o11’ from one point and 16o17’ from the other point.
____________ 2. The angle of a boy standing from a point on a lighthouse 30.5 m
above from the surface of the water makes an angle of 3 o17’with the sea.
____________ 3. A bird sits on top of a 5-meter lamppost. The angle from the bird to
the feet of an observer standing away from the lamppost is 35 o22’.
_____________ 4. A stargazer saw the planet Jupiter at midnight and assumed that
his angle to the planet in the sky is 43o17’.
_____________ 5. From an airplane at an altitude of 1,200 meters, its angle in
connection with a rock from the ground is 28o18’.

LESSON

In the previous self-learning module, you have learned how to illustrate the
angles of elevation and depression. Now, in this self-learning module, we are going
to solve real-life problems involving the concept of angle of elevation.
Examples:

Solve the following problems.

1. A man standing outside of his house flew kites every afternoon during ECQ.
According to him, he used 1,250 meters of string to fly the kite. If the angle of
elevation of the kite to the ground is 43o15’. What is the distance of the kite to
the ground?

Kite

1,250 m x
1,250 m x

43𝑜 15′
Man Ground 43𝑜 15′
Solution:
𝑥
sin 43𝑜 15′ =
1250

𝑥 = 1250 sin 43𝑜 15′

𝑥 = 1250(0.6852)

𝒙 = 𝟖𝟓𝟔. 𝟒𝟖 𝒎
2. The Philippine Arena, the world’s largest indoor arena has a height of 65 meters.
Suppose an observer is standing 30 meters away from the entrance, what would be
his angle of elevation to the roof of the arena?

Roof of arena

65 m
65 m
θ
30 m observer θ
30 m

Solution:
65
tan 𝜃 =
30

tan 𝜃 = 2.1667

𝜃 = tan−1 2.1667

𝜽 = 𝟔𝟓𝒐 𝟏𝟑′

ACTIVITIES
ACTIVITY 1: LET’S PRACTICE!
Directions: Solve for the value of x. Give the lengths of the sides in two decimal places.

For numbers 3, 4, and 5, solve for θ and give the values of the angle in degrees and
minutes.

ACTIVITY 2: KEEP PRACTICING!

Direction: Solve each right triangle. Given that ∠C = 90o , give the lengths of the sides
to two decimal places and the angles in degrees and minutes.

1. A = 55o 43′ , a = 9.43, find b and c

2. b = 100, c = 450, find A and B

ACTIVITY 3: TEST YOURSELF!

Direction: Solve the following problems.
1. The angle of elevation to the top of the flagpole is 34 o from a point 48 meters
from the base of the flagpole. What is the height of the flagpole?
2. When the angle of elevation of the sun is 61o, the building casts a horizontal
shadow of 50 meters. How high is the building?
3. Aries stands 105 feet away from the base of the tree. He measured the angle
of elevation to the top of the tree is 72o. How tall is the tree?
4. A 200-ft building casts a horizontal shadow of 120 ft. long. What is the angle
of elevation of the sun?
5. If a kite is 150 ft. high when 800 ft. of string is out, what is the angle that the
kite makes with the ground?
WRAP-UP

We use the angle of elevation in solving real-life problems if the angle is formed
above the surface. As the name itself suggests, the angle of elevation is so formed
that it is above the observer’s eye.
