Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics 10 Self-Learning Module 6 on Percentile of

Ungrouped Data!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics 10 Self-Learning Module 6 on Percentile of

Ungrouped Data!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

a. first quartile c. third quartile
b. second quartile d. fourth decile
2. What is the 50th percentile of the following set of data: 10, 23, 15, 16, 20?
a. 10 c. 16
b. 15 d. 20
3. In a 60- item test, you got 55 which is the 60th percentile. What does it mean?
a. You got the highest score.
b. Your score is higher than 40 % of your classmates.
c. 40 % of your classmates got the scores higher than 55.
d. 60 % of your classmates did not pass the test.

b. P75 d. D7
5. What is the 20th percentile of the following set of data: 91, 61, 50, 40, 83?
a. 40 c. 44
b. 50 d. 55

RECAP

Direction: Find the indicated quartile for the following set of data.
1. 18, 15, 17, 19, 10, 11 2nd quartile(Q2)
2. 87, 88, 89, 86, 80, 81, 85, 84, 84 3rd quartile(Q3)
3. 130, 135, 130, 132, 134, 136, 139 1st quartile(Q1)
LESSON

Percentiles are values that separates a set of data into 100 equal groups. We can use
P1, P2, P3,… P99 to represent percentile. It is used to describe values according to the
percentage below them. For example, P1 separates the lowest 1% from the other 99%,
P2 separates the lowest 2% from the other 98%. P20 or the 20th percentile means 20%
of the data have values less than or equal to P20.
Percentiles can be computed in the same way as deciles and quartiles.
Steps:
a. Arrange the values of the data in ascending order.
𝑘
b. Use the formula 𝑃𝑘 = (𝑛 + 1)𝑡ℎ position/score
100

c. Interpolate if necessary
Example 1:
Find the 20th percentile of the following set of data:
27, 29, 20, 28, 25, 25, 23, 30, 28, 24
Solution:
a. Arrange the data in ascending order
20, 23, 24, 25, 25, 27, 28, 28, 29, 30
𝑘
b. Use the formula 𝑃𝑘 = (𝑛 + 1)𝑡ℎ position/score
100
n=10
𝑘
Position of 𝑃𝑘 = (𝑛 + 1)𝑡ℎ
100
20
𝑃20 = (10 + 1)𝑡ℎ
100
𝑃20 = 2.2th score, which lies between 2nd and 3rd score

20, 23, 24, 25, 25, 27, 28, 28, 29, 30

c. Interpolate the value to obtain P20

1. Subtract the second data from the third data: 24 – 23 = 1
2. Multiply the result by the decimal part obtained in the position of
P20 : 1 (0.2) = .2
3. Add the result to the 2nd or the smaller number : 23 + 0.2 = 23.2

Example 2 :
Find the 30th percentile, given the scores of 9 students in their Mathematics
Periodical Test.
45, 38, 35, 29, 54, 54,43, 42, 38
Solution:
a. Arrange the data in ascending order
29, 35, 38, 38, 42, 43, 45, 54, 54
𝑘
b. Use the formula 𝑃𝑘 = (𝑛 + 1)𝑡ℎ position/score
100
n=9
30
𝑃30 = (9 + 1)𝑡ℎ
100
30
𝑃30 = (10)𝑡ℎ
100
𝑃30 = 3 rd score

29, 35, 38, 38, 42, 43, 45, 54, 54, 55, 56, 60
𝑃30 = 38
This means that 30 % of the students got a score of 38 and below.

WRAP – UP

✓ How do you calculate for the indicated percentile of a given set of data?
✓ Is 𝑃50 equal to the median of the given set of ungrouped data?
✓ What is the importance of percentile?

VALUING
Percentile helps you understand what position you belong to. It
answers if you are above or below the rank or at the middle. In our life, let us
remember that whatever position you hold to, it is important to be humble.
Humility is a virtue.
Think of some situations that you could show humility. Write your
answer on the blanks provided below.
