 Direct and Indirect Speech
 Direct Speech
- Uses comma (“”) before the speech marks.
- The Exact words spoken must be enclosed in speech marks
- The First Letter of the Speech must begin with a capital letter
- The words in the speech marks must be separated from the rest of the
sentence by a comma
 Ex. Mari said, “I might come late.”
 Indirect Speech
- Doesn’t use the exact words of the speaker
- No speech marks and changes the pronouns and verb tenses
- A Report of what was said
 Ex. Mari said, “I might come late.” = Mari said that she might come late.
o Rules for Indirect Speech
1. “That” – Use the word “that” before the indirect Statement
 Ex. Mari said, “I might come late.” = Mari said that she might come late.
2. Pronouns – From 1st person pronouns, it should become 3rd Person
Pronouns
 Ex. The man said, “I understand.” = The man said that he understood.
3. Verb Tenses:
a. Simple Present – Simple Past

b. Present Continuous – Past Continuous
 He said, “I am Playing.” = He said that he was Playing
c. Simple Past – Past Perfect
 He said, “i played football for 2 years” = He said that he had played
football for 2 years
d. If the reporting verb is in Present/Future tense, the verb tense in the
reported is not changed

4. Imperative-Infinitive – The imperative mood changes into infinitive
