There are eight types of marriage described in Manava Dharma Sastra / Manusmriti. Brahma,
Deiva, Arsha, Prajapatya, Asura, Gandharva, Rakshasa, Pisacha.
The philosophy behind various rituals associated with the marriage ceremony being conducted
at home are guided by various Sastras and Sampradaya. Certain essential rites and rituals
remain common to all, for the validity of the marriage. Unless such rituals are performed, the
marriage is not considered as solemnized or sanctified.
There is a general belief that human being are created by Brahma. (Brahma Srushti). Human
being always believed in super powers and feels that the creator GOD is always there to
support him. Hence he offer neivedya (food offerings), Alankara (clothes, jewels etc), flowers,
dravyas and all other upacharams to his best possible ways and means. During special
occasions at our home, the offering are done in a bigger way. Likewise we wish to celebrate
marriage event of the GOD & GODDESS and hence Kalyana Utsavams are performed at
Temples for Deities. It is also recognized in Agama Sastra.
Normally Kalyana Utsavams are performed during the Panguni Utthiram day (Uthra Palguna
in Palguna month) or at the end of annual Brahmotsavam. In Murugan temple, additionally it
is performed on Aaippasi (Asvija month) soon after Skanda Sashti Surasamharam (Devasena
Kalyanam) and on the Vaikasi (Vaishaka month) Visakam day (Valli Kalyanam).
The deity’s marriage ceremonies are to be performed as prescribed in Agama Sastra and as
per the local tradition on a prefixed day as stated above. Kamika & Karana Agama list out the
rites & rituals for the ceremony. For your convenient we give below a few common rituals:-
Special note on Pravaram: At home, it is one of the main event in Marriage ceremony,
wherein, at least three generations of family lineage of the Bride & Bridegroom are recalled
and publicized/announced. This is to declare that both are going to be united in the wedlock.
And thereafter, the bride gets transferred to the ‘gothra’ or family tree of her husband (bride
groom). It is also a custom that bride & bride groom should belong to different gothra or
family lineage. To prevent marriage within the same gothra, and one should be aware of at
least past three generation, pravaram is announced in the marriage ceremony.
In Temples, Pravaram announcing event is not followed for the simple reason that we cannot
find the family lineage of the creator GOD. While, as per the sishtacharam, one should not
try to trace the lineage and origin of a Rishi or Sacred River, how could we trace the lineage
of GOD who is a srushti kartha. HE is the one who create everything. However during
Kalyana-Utsavam (Marriage ceremony) for Deities at certain temples, the priest announce the
lineage, sourced from the sacred Puranas and epics wherein the GOD is said to be appeared
in different ‘avatar’. For the benefit of the readers of this article we have given, at the end of
this article, the ‘Pravaram’ for certain deities.
