The costs of various ocean energy technologies remain a significant barrier to deployment, and innovation will be key to reducing costs through research and development focused on sub-components, component integration, and array optimization. Additionally, socio-economic, infrastructural, and environmental barriers like developing energy markets, infrastructure, grid connections, supply chains, and mitigating environmental impacts must also be addressed.

Looking forward we find that the respective costs of these different ocean energy
technologies remain a significant barrier to deployment. Innovation will be key to
reducing and efforts will need to focus on sub-component (e.g. power take off, prime mover, control systems), component integration and array optimisation RD&D. In addition, various socio-economic, infrastructural and environmental barriers also need to be addressed such as developing supportive energy market conditions, delivering facilitative infrastructure, providing grid connection, growing supply chains and mitigating against associated environmental impacts.
