Philosophy Statement

Getting involved in the music classroom is a great initiative to promote growth and

mindfulness in a student as they grow up. But once you have the student in the classroom

how do you make sure that that growth can happen? I believe that the classroom that

they’re in must be created and maintained in a specific way to ensure that this growth can

happen. That specific way is by creating a healthy, brave, and safe space for my students

to grow as they become musicians. By doing this, students can fully explore themselves

and their possible love for music.

To do this you have to build a foundation in your classroom from the day you arrive

and reinforce practices and procedures that can help maintain your healthy, brave, and

safe space for your students. Some of those practices include providing clear

communication, focusing on making good people, creating a personal buy-in or motivator,

and by creating a well-balanced work/play environment.

I believe that in this time period we should focus more on the process of guiding

the student rather than the product the student can provide. That’s why these practices

focus on the student’s comfortability level and emotional level, which directly correlates

to how much they will contribute and work in the music classroom. It’s plain and simple,

if the student doesn’t like what they do or enjoy being where they are it will take more

effort to get them to give you good quality work. If you adhere to the students’ needs and
use their interests to fuel your instruction and environment, you and your students will

enjoy making music even more than you already do and your influence on them as a

teacher will be much longer lasting than you think.
