MODULE DESCRIPTION

Introduction The students inspiring to be the future Business Analysists and Information System
Specialists are the primary audience for this module. The main focus of this module is
to review how organizations can improve their business operations with Business
Process Management (BPM) concept. This module presents BPM as a fundamental
requirement and an essential strategic change for a successful business organization. It
illustrates on how Information Technology and e-business models are linked with BPM
as important enablers of the business change. Students get hands on experience on latest
software tools used in BPM lifecycle. Further it reveals the complexity in
implementation of BPM in an enterprise systems architecture. The widely used process
improvement methodologies are also presented as providing a useful set of tools for
managing process change. Students are encouraged to review recent literature relevant
to the topic for the awareness of novel implementations.

Learning At the end of the module student will be able to:


Outcomes
LO1: Define Business Process Management (BPM) emphasizing the critical role
that the process management plays in organizational success. Recognize the
need and growth of it in the changing world.
LO2: Adapt the complete life cycle of BPM, introducing various methodical
approaches that should be followed in each stage of the BPM life cycle.
LO3: Evaluate the role and involvement of IT in business process management
with supportive software tools for BPM.
LO4: Compare and contrast various process improvement techniques appraising
advantages and disadvantages of them.
LO5: Appraise the complexity of business process management in an Enterprise
Architecture
LO6: Review and revise the BPM practices and issues in Sri Lanka while Analyzing the
latest research in the area of BPM.
Assessment e.g., During the semester, there will be one mid-term, lab tests, and a final exam. The mid-
Criteria term test will be based on the practical work, the questions discussed in tutorial sessions,
and lecture material covered until the week before it is held. The final examination will be
a comprehensive exam based on the practical assignments and lecture materials covered
during the semester.
