The rich become richer, the poor become poorer.

This was Elfren Cruz’s main

statement in his opinion edition article entitled, “The reality of Globalization”.

The article was all about how the Globalization benefited certain sectors and

regions but left behind large segments of the society. As the rich become richer, they

were expected to “trickle down” or share their wealth to those who are in need.

However, this kind of condition will never be seen in reality. This was merely a dream.

In fact, those countries who were in the top continue to enrich themselves by

benefiting other poor countries. The main sources of their raw materials were the third

world countries whereas natural resources were abundant. Even within a country,

globalization will make regional inequalities worse. Furthermore, if a country already

reached its high economic growth they tend to lose their competitive edge and

advocate protectionism. Best examples were United States and United Kingdom were

once champions of globalization and open markets. Imagine how the third world

countries improve themselves if they cannot make their own resources beneficial for

them not for the others.

Globalization has been part of our everyday living. Issues about its effects

whether it was good or bad were still mixed up until nowadays. It will always be an

advantage in the mind of a rich but disadvantage in the mind of the poor ones.

Globalization brings opportunities but it also brings risks. The article was an eye

opener for us normal citizens to be aware of the happenings nowadays. Not all the

things beneficial for other countries were also beneficial for our own. We will never

know its effect unless we put ourselves in the situation, making ourselves involved in

the issue. Always remember that our eyes can only see but only our mind can read.
