Overview of Temperate Deciduous Forests

Temperate deciduous forests are located between polar regions and the tropics, experiencing four distinct seasons. They are found in parts of North America, Europe, Asia, and South America. In these forests, trees lose their leaves seasonally, shedding in fall and winter. Common threats include climate change, which disrupts the ecosystem.

WHAT IS A TEMPERATE DECIDUOUS FOREST?
Temperate Deciduous Forests are located in areas in between the polar
regions and the tropics. As these forests are exposed to the cold and
warm air, it experiences the four seasons.

The major areas where temperate decidous forests proliferate are: North
America, East Asia, Central and Western Europe, Northern Spain, Southern
Sweden, Southern Norway, and the Southern Hemisphere of Chile and
Argentina.

SPRING SUMMER FALL/AUTUMN WINTER

THE FOUR SEASONS
SPRING
It is the season between Winter and Summer where the temperature rises
gradually and the plants begin to continue its growth and other functions,
while some of the animals slowly rouse themselves from hibernation.

In the Northern Hemisphere, it is generally defined as the season which extends

from Vernal Equinox (amoment in the year where the days and nights is equal in
leangth) of March 20 or 21, to Summer Solstice (the longest period in a year).

SUMMER
Summer is the season of the year where it is the warmest. It is usually
defined as the season between the Summer Solstice of June 21 or 22 and
Autumnal Equinox of September 22 or 23.

Summer is known for its generally hot weather with high humidity which
may cause a heat wave.
WHAT IS A TEMPERATE DECIDUOUS FOREST?
AUTUMN (alternatively: Fall)
It is the season between Summer and Winter where the temperature gradually
decreases. This season is defined with how it is in between of Autumnal Equinox
and the Winter Solstice (the shortest day of the year) of December 21 or 22.

This season is known as a period of transition where the warm temperature of

the Summer season slowly lowers to the Winter Season.

WINTER
Winter is the coldest season of the year and it is in between of Autumn
and Spring. It is defined for its duration from Winter Solstice to the
Vernal Equinox.

This season is known as the period of dormancy for most living creatures
where plants leave their seed and die in preparation for spring and
other animals enters a state of hibernation.
TEMPERATURE
The temperature in
temperate deciduous
forest are often in

the ranges in -30°C

(-22°F) and 30°C
(86°F)

The average yearly

temperature is 10°C
(50°F)
LANDSCAPES AND LOCATIONS OF TEMPERATE DECIDUOUS FORESTS
Temperate deciduous forests are commonly found in the northern
hemisphere, and these forests are located in where there are mountains,
valleys, rolling hills, and flat plateaus, usually accompanied with
lakes and rivers.

Temperate deciduous forests can also be seen on lower and middle slopes
of landscapes, though it transitions to other types of biomes.
Animals
Smaller mammals in the
temperate deciduous forests
include rabbits, otters,
monkeys, beavers, raccoons,
porcupines and squirrels.
Bears, white-tailed deer,
moose, tigers, elephants,
giraffes, leopards, pandas
and humans are some of the
larger mammals that live in
this biome.
Plants
Temperate deciduous forests
have a great variety of plant
species. Most have three levels
of plants. Lichen, moss, ferns,
wildflowers and other small
plants can be found on the
forest floor. Shrubs fill in
the middle level and hardwood
trees like maple, oak, birch,
magnolia, sweet gum and beech
make up the third level.
Threats
Climate change is the biggest
threat of the temperate
deciduous forests, as it
affects the entire ecosystem of
the forest. Most of these
causes deeply affect the
wildlife population,
drastically change the
temperature, and eliminate
plant species.
Usually, the causes are
man-made, but some are natural.
