You have now learned about tornadoes by reviewing three sources: the passage from Tornado!

,
the article “Measuring Tornadoes,” and the article “New Alert System Designed to Warn
Residents of Storms and Other Dangers.”
Write an essay explaining the purpose of the information in each source. Be sure to include how
data gathered by scientists and officials have changed our understanding of tornadoes. Support
your answer with evidence from each source.

Tornadoes are dangerous. Tornadoes have many levels of danger. They can destroy
almost anything in their path. But, we can protect ourselves from them. Today, we have three
sources to use. These sources show how scientists and officials have helped our understanding
of tornadoes.

Firstly, tornadoes have many effects on our environment. I know this because in the
article from Tornado! It says that a tornado had plucked a telephone pole out of the ground. Not
only that, it tore through a barnyard, and stripped chickens of their feathers. It also says, in 1944
a tornado passing over West Fork River, Virginia sucked the whole river dry.

Secondly, tornadoes can have different levels of danger. In the article, “Measuring
Tornadoes,” There are 6 levels of danger, but we will only talk about 2 of them, the lowest level,
and the highest level. The lowest level, F0, or gale tornado, may cause little damage such as
breaking branches off trees, damaging chimneys, and damaging sign boards. They can also go
up to 40-72 miles per hour. The highest level, F5, or incredible tornado, has phenomenal
damage. It can lift strong-framed homes off the ground and push them a decent distance. Trees
will also be debarked. They can go up to 261-318 miles per hour.

Lastly, we can protect ourselves from tornadoes. In the article, “New Alert System,”
TAVARES is a warning system that can issue weather warnings and other critical issues.
TAVARES has dispatched tornado warnings to residents in East Lake. Those who have
received the message would have heard the words, “This is an emergency message from Lake
County Emergency Management. The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning
for your area. Take immediate action and shelter. Monitor your favorite local media outlet for
additional weather updates.” This telecommunications-based system is more preferred to sirens
because they can be ineffective in heavily forested areas like Lake and muffled by
noise-canceling designs of some homes and new cars.

Overall, scientists and officials have helped us get a better understanding of tornadoes.
Tornadoes can be really dangerous, and these articles help us understand that. They destroy
anything and once again, these articles help understand this. Thanks to this data, we will be
able to protect ourselves from tornadoes
