PIPE WEIGHT CALCULATIONS

3.1 Empty weight of pipe

Dry weight of pipe is calculated as per following formulae:

Weight of steel of pipe [Wsteel] = 𝜋 (𝐷𝑠 2 − 𝐷𝑖 2 )𝜌𝑠

4
where, 𝐷𝑖 = 𝐷𝑠 − 2𝑡𝑠
155.128 kg/m

Weight of external coating [1st coat] [Wcoat1] = 𝜋 (𝐷𝑐𝑜𝑎𝑡1 2 − 𝐷𝑠 2 ) 𝜌𝑐𝑜𝑎𝑡1

4
where, 𝐷𝑐𝑜𝑎𝑡1 = 𝐷𝑠 + 2𝑡𝑐𝑜𝑎𝑡1
4.314 kg/m

Weight of external coating [2nd coat] [Wcoat2] = 𝜋 (𝐷𝑐𝑜𝑎𝑡2 2 − 𝐷𝑐𝑜𝑎𝑡1 2 ) 𝜌𝑐𝑜𝑎𝑡2

4
where, 𝐷𝑐𝑜𝑎𝑡2 = 𝐷𝑠 + 2(𝑡𝑐𝑜𝑎𝑡1 + 𝑡𝑐𝑜𝑎𝑡2 )
0.000 kg/m

Total empty weight of pipe [We] = 𝑊𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑙 + 𝑊𝑐𝑜𝑎𝑡1 + 𝑊𝑐𝑜𝑎𝑡2

159.442 kg/m

3.2 Submerged weight of pipe

Submerged weight of pipe is calculated as below:

Buoyancy force (weight of bentonite [Wb] = 𝜋 (𝐷𝑐𝑜𝑎𝑡2 2 ) 𝜌𝑏𝑒𝑛𝑡

displaced by the pipe) 4

297.876 kg/m

Submerged weight of pipe in the [Ws] = 𝑊𝑒 − 𝑊𝑏

drilled hole

DRILLED PATH ANALYSIS

4.1 Drilling hole design

The designed drilling path consists of a series of straight lines and curves.

The straight lines are referred to as tangents. The straight sections are those in which the
drilling hole curvature is ideally zero. This implies that any pipe section can be considered as
straight section if the curvature of that section is less than that necessary to make the pipe
deviate beyond the walls of the hole, which is approx. 1.5 times larger in diameter than the
pipe itself.

The curves are typically sag bend and over bend. The curved sections are considered short
enough to assume one constant radius for the entire sweep of that section.

A plot of simple designed drilled profile is shown in figure below:

Fig. Typical horizontal directional drilling profile

4.2 Drilling hole profile

Description Type Angle Direction Length

Section A to B Straight 8o Downwards LAB = 15.430 m

Section B to C Curved 8 o to 0o Downwards LBC = 76.794 m

Section C to D Straight 0o Horizontal LCD = 111.222 m

Section D to E Curved 0o to 9 o Upwards LDE = 86.394 m

Section E to F Straight 9o Upwards LEF = 11.050 m

Total drilling length of the HDD crossing Ldrill = 300.890 m
