INTRODUCTION

1.1 General
The “Project” project of Client involves installation of pipeline of size 508 mm × 12.7 mm
wall thickness across the pipeline by horizontal directional drilling (HDD) methodology by
Contractor. The horizontal length of the crossing is 300 m and the pipeline will be laid at a
depth of 10.5 m below the Reference Level (RL).

1.2 Scope
The scope of this document covers load and stress analysis for the horizontal directional
drilling of the pipeline for the “Project” project. The load analysis includes drilled path
analysis and pulling load calculation for the pipe string. The stress analysis includes
installation condition, hydrostatic test (post-installation) condition as well as operation
condition for the pipeline along with the design service load calculation.

It also includes calculation for minimum bending radius for the curved part of the crossing
profile based on allowable stresses under installation condition, hydrostatic test condition and
operation condition.

1.5 Executive Summary

Total drilling length of the HDD crossing [Ldrill] = 300.890 m

Required pulling capacity for HDD Rig (1.25 × pulling force) [FRig] = 44.36 MT

Empty weight of pipe (on rollers) [We] = 159.442 MT

Submerged weight of pipe down-hole [Ws] = -138.434 kg/m

Minimum elastic bend radius (for profile curvature) [Rmin] = 485 m
